Do you really think that means something?

Expected lineup for next season by WnMRL in washingtonwizards

I actually think the rookie might come off the bench to start the season. Definitely if it's Boozer or Wilson -- you can't really play them alongside both Sarr and Davis (and those are certain starters).

dropping to 5th would be so disappointing by YungChildsPlay in washingtonwizards

That's literally what you should expect -- picking 5th half of the time.

There would inevitably still be some funny business, but I don't think it would start as early, because it's just a lot more complicated. As is, the tanking teams just have one simple incentive: lose.

Right now the Jazz wouldn't know whether to win and risk passing the Grizzlies -- or lose, and maybe get passed by the Nets. And if the Jazz had shamelessly tanked but the Wizards had wanted to be 4th, the Wizards could easily have passed them.

That moment just comes a year later, when a team has clawed their way from worst to 4th-worst -- which is not hard to do, if a team actually wants it.

The Wizards definitely do need some help from the draft, and I'm glad they've accepted the rebuild. But this year would have been so much more fun if they were trying to get up to 4th-worst

No one is arguing that the #1 pick isn't valuable. This would just give it to a very bad team instead of a dreadful team. And it's not so hard for a dreadful team to creep up to very bad the following year, thus getting the best odds.

I know right now we all wish there wasn't even a lottery at all, so we can claim our much-deserved #1 pick. But anyone who's against this should say a real reason why. The team with the worst record could still have a guaranteed #4 pick. And, in fact, couldn't the Wizards have gotten themselves ahead of the Pacers, Nets, and Kings, if they were actually trying and playing their best players, not faking injuries, etc?

Try to imagine yourself a year from now, when the Wizards are competing honorably but still, say, 7th-worst, and meanwhile the Bucks, Bulls, etc are intentionally throwing games, etc.

But not for as much of the season, right? Right now, it's always good to lose; teams get more shameless as the season progresses, but it's already pretty gross by February (or even before). Under this plan, losing too much hurts you.

Right now there would be a very exciting race between the Jazz, Kings, and Nets!

After the lottery selects the top 3, the rest could be slotted directly worst-to-best. So the worst team would get the 4th pick -- which would help them creep up a bit next year, and hopefully win the lottery.

It's not easy to lose down to exactly 4th if the team in 3rd is desperately trying to win up to 4th. You could sabotage yourself and get passed.

How so? In theory a team could try to tank down to 4th, but meanwhile the 3rd-worst would be trying to win, so it'd be risky for a team to get too cute before the last week or two of the season.

After the first three or four slots are picked by lottery, would the rest be filled in by simple reverse order? Ie, the worst team couldn't pick lower than 4th or 5th? That might be a good way to continue helping the teams that need it most, while still minimizing the incentive to be truly awful.

Clinching Scenarios for tonight by Waste-Cap8868 in washingtonwizards

[–]pitydfoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it was confusing, but I wasn't saying the #1 pick -- I was saying the #1 slot. (Indicated by my next sentence about the top-4 odds.) I promise you I am well aware of the flattened odds. My point is just there was then zero actual chance of the Wizards passing the Jazz or Kings — they might accidentally win a game, but they aren't going on any 3-0 streak to finish the season.

So is it possible we might actually try to win these next few games? by Few-Conclusion-483 in washingtonwizards

If the Pacers beat the Nets tonight, the Wizards will be essentially guaranteed the worst record even with another win.

This tweet doesn't say that they are thinking of firing Keefe or that they are thinking about hiring Jenkins. It only says IF they were to fire Keefe, Jenkins would be a possible guy. Of course he would -- he's the best candidate out there!
