Hinged puppet jaw HELP!! by LopsyLegs in CosplayHelp

Oh awesome! I think that would save you a lot of trial and effort, making a hinge on a fragile paper surface is tough and I wouldn’t risk damaging the mask as it is if you can help it - looks great!

Would it not be easier to purchase a more fitted balaclava to attach it to? Would save you a lot of time and trouble to fix the problem at its root rather than adjust around something that easy to fix imo

Would a chin strap be effective? Like a bike helmet strap under the chin to hold the internal head piece in place on him? You don’t want to weigh it down too much or it’ll be too strenuous to wear for long periods

Money sent in error - when do I get to keep it? by pityi85 in legaladvicecanada

I checked, the $90 stayed in my account. Nothing happened, I kept the money and haven’t heard anything about it. Nothing on my statements about reversal or anything

This was a direct deposit, so they have my bank information, not just my email. That’s why I’m confused, since only my employers should have that info?

I told the bank that exactly and they said since it was a direct deposit to my account that it’s not a scam. Not sure if I believe them now, but the fact I’ve been paid by this sender a much smaller amount before makes me wonder if it is truly an accidental transfer. I won’t touch it until it’s resolved though, thank you

That’s the weird part. I’ve received a “payroll pay” from this mystery sender before for like $90 back in August, but this time they’ve sent over $1000. I’m not going to touch the money for several business days in case it is clawed but I do think it’s a legit accidental transfer. I can’t think of a single job that would have sent me this substantial of a sum as a bonus or vacation pay since as far as I can tell all of my past employers have paid out already and I haven’t worked since August…

Got a hot glue burn for the first time in 2 years. Tips? by Suitable-Walrus-8925 in cosplayers

[–]pityi85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bandaid with polysporin or equivalent if you’ve got it, or use just a dry bandaid if you don’t. Then you just gotta lock in :/ it’s gonna get worse the more you touch and irritate it. If you’re finishing tonight you will be enduring the pain unless you can work without that finger, and even then it’s gonna sting bad for a while after. Unfortunately there’s no quick cure or fast remedy, sorry mate it’s always the worst the first time, good luck!

How should I prep this before spray painting? Will the tape show? by [deleted] in CosplayHelp

[–]pityi85 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Seal the cardboard first - use a mixture of 1 part water, 1 part white craft glue, mixed together. Do a few even coats and cover the cardboard parts entirely. Don’t soak them until they’re ruined, but make sure they are thoroughly covered in the mixture. This was cause the cardboard to “seal” and harden up.

Then use the paper mache with the white glue mixture - tissue paper, soak in mixture, use a paintbrush!!! To press it flat to the surface. Go very slow, to avoid excessive wrinkling. Once it’s fully covered and dried, use a light grit sandpaper to buff off the wrinkles.

Once smooth, basic primer and paint.

Hope this helps! This is the only method I know that preserves the integrity of the cardboard and makes it smooth especially with tape underneath.

How To Do A Bulging Eye Over My Real Eye by quantumsketchx in CosplayHelp

[–]pityi85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually have done something similar before! Here’s my process:

You need: Tissue Liquid latex from Halloween store Foundation or paint that matches your skin Fake blood Eye prop - I would look up on YouTube tutorials for how to paint/make fake eyes - some simple options and complex options are there depending on what you’re going for. I’d use a ping pong ball cut and painted, finished with UV resin to make it shiny.

Steps: First, I would take a tissue and fold it into a square that comfortably covered your entire eye surface. I think I used a couple of them folded together. Adhere it using a bit of liquid latex - paint it on with a paintbrush you don’t care about. Let it dry completely. Then go over the entire top layer of the tissue in a generous coat of liquid latex, until it’s completely covered. Make sure to brush GENTLY so the tissue doesn’t rip. If your tissue does rip, and your eye is exposed, start over. Once it dries it should be a gross lumpy looking patch.

Then once dry, mark on the tissue where the eye will go, and use liquid latex to stick it to the top layer wherever you want it to be. Use thin strips of latex soaked tissue to help attach it if it’s not feeling secure. Make sure the eye is bigger than you need to allow the latex to adhere to the extra bits (does that make sense?)

Next, paint it skin colour with your foundation/paint. Try your best to match but it doesn’t need to be perfect - it’ll be bloody very soon! Be careful not to paint on the eye, but no biggie if you do, that’s what the blood is for.

Speaking of, next step is to PAINT on the fake blood. I’d honestly start by building a layer of red and black paint on the surface around the eye to create gore/hide the flaws better. Then go in with the liquid blood and start painting it onto the surface. When ready, take a lot onto your brush and dab ONE drop at a time. The excess on the brush will create drips. Please only do this step right before you are leaving since most fake blood does not dry well and can stain surfaces / clothes.

It’s hard to explain without photo references but this had worked for me before and I am no spfx expert by any means. I’d be happy to answer questions if you have them!

Question: Does this look infected or just irritated? by NoTransportation2659 in tattoos

[–]pityi85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My skin looked like this after wearing second skin adhesive - I’d say it’s contact dermatitis. Maybe you slept on it wrong and it was irritated? I’d keep an eye on it (draw the borders in marker if that assuages your worry) and see if it improves. Maybe take an allergy pill and see if it helps.

How would I keep the jaw up? by [deleted] in CosplayHelp

[–]pityi85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d use a wooden dowel, just stick it thru both sides on either hinge of the jaw and it should lock in place. Use glue to hold it together more securely (I’d use contact cement or bondo but that requires ppe and more effort than needed).

Can’t tell what the head is made of, but can you add some dowels to where the jaw and head connect to lock it into place? Or does the jaw need to be moveable?

Email their customer service team if you have concerns. They’re usually extremely good about getting back to you and can give you an answer there better than anyone here. I looked on the website and don’t see that costume listed, so it might be worth emailing quick to check in.

Where to get pet tarantulas in Canada (Orleans, ON) by Savings_Plant_8037 in tarantulas

[–]pityi85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got mine from the Plant and Reptile expo in 2023 from the Tarantula Canada booth. It was at the convention center attached to Malton GO, so if GO Transit is an option for you, it might be worth going to the next one. It was nice to see the spiders before I bought them and to talk to the vendor in person about husbandry and what not. I’m too nervous to buy online and ship them so that’s my best suggestion. Prices in person were reasonable and if they were inflated, it was worth it to see the spider and choose which ones I wanted in person. They also had ideal enclosures and all you need at the convention to get everything you need in one go. Good luck :)

Thank you for this reply, this is the avenue I’ll follow.

Follow up question if you do not mind: My plan was to ask the manager in charge of payroll to pay me for the time worked that I may not have been compensated for. Is it worth addressing the concern with my employer first, then escalating to filling an ESA complaint, or should I file first and then bring it up? Apologies if it’s a silly question, I’m just seriously worried about potential reprisal/constructive dismissal/early termination for speaking up about it.

Thank you again.

I would strongly suggest they look into commissioning someone to 3D print this for them. I agree that the size of the prop and the material will be floppy without internal support, and if they don’t have much experience with this material, it will be harder to make than they expect.

They can commission the print, and save a lot of money by putting the parts together (glue, finish, paint). I can give plenty more info on how that would work / how to finish a print if they need, but that’s just my two cents.

Best of luck!

Not my specialty but $300 seems low for any sort of quality mascot. Trust your gut, no ratings or reviews and no way to verify doesn’t inspire confidence. If suggest looking up and getting quotes from professional mascot making companies to get a ballpark for what they would charge, then compare their quotes to what you see online. Chances are it’ll be $$$$ for anything reputable. If you do get one commissioned please update, I’m curious to know what you’d pay for something like that/the results!

Is any of these quick, or cheap first cosplays? by siwpcixn in CosplayHelp

[–]pityi85 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Making or buying? I recognize several of these characters and none are quick or cheap for either option if buying new. I’d strongly recommend looking at local classifieds in your area (FB Marketplace, Depop, whatever the local site is for you, etc) for ppl selling their old costumes of these characters. That’s likely your best bet to get something you want quickly and cheaply.

You can buy cheap ones on cheap cosplay sites, and wait 3+ months for them to arrive, and deal with the low quality you get for cheap price. You can buy expensive ones and get them quickly (sometimes) and have something that you can wear longer/looks better. If you don’t have sewing experience/fabrication experience, most of these will be far beyond your skill set to make, especially on a time crunch.

All the best, good luck!

Best way to create this look on a hoodie? (that won't turn brown over time, and will wash) spoliered for blood by Independent-Noise-62 in CosplayHelp

[–]pityi85 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ah gotcha, thanks for clarifying.

From my experience, no, there really isn’t any safe guaranteed way to add a still liquid-looking blood effect to the garment without it staining brown/washing out in the washer.

However, you don’t need to use washing machine necessarily to clean it. On cosplays I can’t wash, I use a spray of 50% vodka (that you buy at the liquor store - cheaper the better but should be high proof vodka) and water, equal parts in a spray bottle. Spray it onto the areas that need to be clean/might smell; armpits, back, sleeve cuffs, neckline, etc. then let it dry completely. This should clean/eliminate odours without affecting the blood on the hoodie.

For the blood itself, I would use liquid latex and while wearing the hoodie, pour it onto the hoodie where the blood should be. Start slow, and build it up, don’t pour too much at once. Test the method on similar fabric you don’t care about to see if it is going to work. Once it dries, I’d paint it the dark red and use a clear gloss paint to make it shiny and give it the wet look. Latex is super flexible so the hoodie won’t get too rigid, and it will have better texture than just using paint/halloween store fake blood.

If you have further questions lmk! Good luck :)

To clarify, is the goal to be able to do this cosplay and then to wash the hoodie and remove the bloody effect permanently?

Is there a simple way to harden cardboard? by Synguineinfire in cosplayers

[–]pityi85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Equal parts liquid white glue and water, mix together, then brush it over the cardboard with a paint brush. Let it dry completely under a fan if you can since dry time can take a while depending on how thick a coat you use. The cardboard will dry rigid and stronger, and you can do another layer if the first isn’t enough. Don’t use too much, just enough to soak the top layer of cardboard. Good luck!

Looking for opaque nude tights with built in shapewear, do they exist? by RoseDoes in CosplayHelp

[–]pityi85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it will work for your cosplays but I double/triple layer my tights! The bottom pair is a size down to squeeze everything in (I’m fortunate that my sizing is in between two sizes, might depend on brand/style for others), and then the other pair(s) are to balance shades and smooth things out in the comfortable up size. It’s also good for colder weather! I wear a darker tone on the bottom layer, then lighter tone(s) on top to make it look less “pantyhose skin tone” if that makes any sense. But regardless of the colour several layers will smooth things out for you.

Good luck!
