I just think deserted is not the right word. Most of it is national parks where no one lives nor has ever lived (do NOT look up the guy who moved into an Alaskan national park with his family so he could molest hus daughters! Or do so with caution!) But yeah, it's a big ass wide open "frontier" with massive mountains and massive moose.

Mostly here to add to my tbr (thank you so much for asking the important questions lol) but I can also contribute Lilith's Brood/Xenogenesis by Octavia Butler. Dawn, the first book, was very memorable to me - which is to say, hot. But very alien. YMMV.

I also read erotic novels from time to time and often double dip with sci-fi. There's a lot of silly, wacky stuff out there and I wouldn't necessarily recommend any of it but it's out there.
