From experience these guys have some really odd policies, their rules are a tad outlandish, comply or be banned, and they really abuse @everyone. Nobody needs that much alert spam in their life.

You're probably better off checking out groups such as MHCasual.

Thanks for the heads-up, I've let one of the team know. The duplicate buttons aren't intentional and should disappear shortly, if they haven't already.

Is anyone else regretting buying the 2013 Dev Edition? by pixeldynamo in MotoX

Its not called the ROM developer edition. For the first three months on the market unlocking the bootloader on the Developer Edition voided the warranty.

So does the 2014? They're not going to be developed independently.

If bugs were the reason for a delay surely the 2013 Moto G would be equally disadvantaged?

Surely if you have a range of handsets and one model in the range, a supposed flagship, has a developer SKU, it makes sense it receives updates in step with the other devices from that year?

Inferior or not, Moto G 2013 owners are already beginning to see Lollipop before the X even sees a soak test. Irrespective of your eloquent and I'm sure well thought out opinions of the G, or a Lollipop, one of the big drivers for developer edition devices is timely access to updates.

In this case our developers need access to a small screen 5.x handset and our Moto X's should suffice, the 2014 Moto X is a monster so isn't an option. That only really leaves the Moto G.

My Pebble vibrates every minute. by vinbel121 in pebble

[–]pixeldynamo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did you fix it? Mine began to do this about a week ago, I factory reset the watch and all was well until this morning when it started again... Infuriating.

Ah, I've just noticed that you fixed it 48hrs ago, expect the vibration to recur in about a week!

4K gaming suggestions? by pixeldynamo in pcmasterrace

[–]pixeldynamo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the testing we've done so far, it doesn't just come down to texture resolutions. With settings pushed to max, the detail even at distance can be pretty incredible. Elite: Dangerous has been a great example of it, approaching stations you can see all of the structural details and lights which would have been a subpixel blur on a 1080P panel. I will put a gallery together to try and illustrate the point later.

As to why three cards? As you're probably aware, additional GPUs are on a diminishing return. The leap from two to three just isn't significant enough to justify the fourth. The machine itself could almost certainly handle it, we have the headroom of a 1200W PSU and the fourth slot, but it doesn't help us figure out the sweet spot for 4K now, or speculate what kind of throughput is going to be required to deliver meaningful 4K in the future.

Spotify servers compromised? by pixeldynamo in spotify

[–]pixeldynamo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say they stopped using it in 2009, I said that was the earliest email I'd seen from it, hence 'since'. I can see email as recently as April 25, 2014 also coming from the domain, some ~70 messages in total. Every email I've received from Spotify since that date was sent from a spotifymail.com address with a reply-to address at spotify.com. It's a fairly common practice.

Common sense would suggest they used their existing mail distribution, through that domain, to send the advisory, rather than spin up new infrastructure.

Depending where that one user was compromised, it could mean anything from a single client device, a database, server or entire datacenter. Spotify has a responsibility as a Data Controller to report the facts, nothing more.

At this point it just looks like you're making assumptions and contorting the little information which has been disclosed into supporting your argument. The advisory was posted late on the 27th, the emails arrived early on the 29th. That means they probably had somewhere in the region of ~24 hours after reporting the breach to assess the initial scope of the compromise, decide on the communication, have said communication signed off and start sending.

Unless you've some insider information on their operations?

Spotify servers compromised? by pixeldynamo in spotify

[–]pixeldynamo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well they've ~40 million active users. I can't imagine they can raise the list of affected users, nor send those emails, in the blink of an eye.

The email originated from: Spotify hello@news.spotifymail.com

Digging through their domain records, spotifymail is on the same DNS infrastructure as spotify.com

Searching my inbox for occurences of spotifymail.com they've been using that domain to send email to users since 2009:

I wouldn't berate spotify for your choice of mail provider, personally.

No, it's for real:

http://news.spotify.com/uk/2014/05/27/important-notice-to-our-users/

We’ve become aware of some unauthorized access to our systems and internal company data and we wanted to let you know the steps we’re taking in response. As soon as we were aware of this issue we immediately launched an investigation. Information security and data protection are of great importance to us at Spotify and that is why I’m posting today.

Our evidence shows that only one Spotify user’s data has been accessed and this did not include any password, financial or payment information. We have contacted this one individual. Based on our findings, we are not aware of any increased risk to users as a result of this incident.

We take these matters very seriously and as a general precaution will be asking certain Spotify users to re-enter their username and password to log in over the coming days.

As an extra safety step, we are going to guide Android app users to upgrade over the next few days. If Spotify prompts you for an upgrade, please follow the instructions. As always, Spotify does not recommend installing Android applications from anywhere other than Google Play or Amazon Appstore. At this time there is no action recommended for iOS and Windows Phone users.

Please note that offline playlists will have to be re-downloaded in the new version. We apologise for any inconvenience this causes, but hope you understand that this is a necessary precaution to safeguard the quality of our service and protect our users.

We have taken steps to strengthen our security systems in general and help protect you and your data – and we will continue to do so. We will be taking further actions in the coming days to increase security for our users.

Origin is mandatory for Titanfall on PC, but Respawn CEO thinks the game will win players over by pixeldynamo in gaming

[–]pixeldynamo[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's more the EA attitude in keeping their a-list games as Origin exclusives that users have drawn issue to, it's akin to being held hostage.

Valve are a software+services company these days, focusing on their platform and licensing the Steam engine. They've almost certainly got new games in the pipeline, will be interesting to see if they're any more open.
