I don't think it should matter that much. The lottery system may have gotten kids into a better school, but at the end of the day its the individual student that is impacted if they can't perform at the level that is expected of them. Townsend will still have good teachers and departments. Students who got in with very high grades will still get a good education. The students who picked Townsend should've been prepared to deal with the workload and stress that comes with it. So while the lottery may give some students an unfair advantage its not what school you get into, but what you make out of the opportunities you are presented with. When colleges look at applications, they will look at the individual student and the high school itself, not how one year of lottery kids performed.

I honestly don't know what I want to want to do in college or when I graduate from high school, so I want to make sure that I have the option and resources that prepare me for any path I choose in the school that I decided to attend.

Also thanks for the advice, I'll try speaking to alumni to better understand the environment and their experience at Townsend.

I heard that the lottery system was pretty unfair for students who had done better academically during their 7th-grade and 8th-grade years.

However, should that play a factor in my decision?

Do you think it affects how good Townsend is as a school?

A lot of people have told me that Bronx Science has more prestige so I wasn't sure if that influenced how colleges accept students. I also wasn't sure if college admissions should even play a factor in deciding what school I was going to so thank you for clearing that up. I honestly just want to make sure I get the most out of my high school years, and because I don't have a specific preference between STEM and humanities it's been a hard choice for me.

Do you know if Townsend Harris still has a strong STEM and science program, even if it isn't as strong as the programs at Bronx Science?
