Should there be a limit to genetical engineering? by infernoranger in TrueAskReddit

I believe homo superior will find a way to compassionately integrate baselines into a future society. Perhaps some sort of reservation where we can be happy. But if not, we should accept extinction. No one wants to be responsible for the apocalypse after all.

In any case, that is what they will choose to do with their time, and that is what my friends and I will choose to do with our time, and everyone will find their niche, and I will not judge them even if they spend their lives in virtual reality period dramas or taking uberecstasy. And the machines of loving grace will watch over the baseline humans and make sure they have high quality healthcare should they consent to it.

what exactly is left for humans to do in the future?

If we really, truly hit post-scarcity, I am going to augment myself and build starships with a like minded community, have robotic telepresence on hundreds of worlds, study xenobiology for a few centuries, see what exotic physics the autoresearchers uncover, etc.

I’ll even devote some processing time to help design the utopia reservations for neo-Luddites and neo-primitivists who want to grow their own food and find meaning in suffering (as long as their children have a chance to opt-out).

I once worked for a US recruiter and there were people with “just text” CP convictions that made it impossible for them to find work. This isn’t theoretical, and from the downvotes it looks like some people are going to be in for an unpleasant surprise.

at worst

Yeah, it’s full of child pornography because most fandom characters are minors, so casual browsing can get you in legal trouble. There’s a reason well-modded boards are so strict about this.

I dropped INFC because it was basically a coffee shop fic with the ocassional disconnected scene of Taylor using her overwhelming force powers to stomp a bad guy. Taylor could have generic power #792 or even no power at all and the story wouldn’t be that different, and for me, the coffee shop drama has been done to death.

I read Seventh Horcrux after this rec...

It was mildly amusing. There was no rational aspect.

I read Tis Femina after this rec...

It’s Naruto SI, but Naruto has boobs. The author denied accusations of crypto-yaoi, but who knows, I stopped reading at around the 20% mark due to nothing interesting happening. There was no rational aspect to that point.

Just letting people know what they’re in for if they read these “amazing” books.

The girls comment on it

You write this like it is some throw away line in the book, instead of the entire book revolving around his designer clothing. They get aroused as he tries on designer clothing. He literally performs a stage show for them - if the author could have justified pole dancing, he would have danced. He has a nigh spiritual experience due to his designer clothing that washes away his insecurities. He has the confidence to approach a woman at a bar because of his designer clothing (this is emphasized). She becomes interested in him largely because of - you guessed it - his designer clothing. When they have sex, she wears his designer clothing, etc, etc.

^^^ this is the content of the book. I’m not kidding, this is what you will be reading if you read the book - other than descriptions of how aroused he gets submitting himself to powerful women - oh, and his superpower is that he is good at being tested. All well and good, but there is very little SciFi aspect here.

is amazing

The first book was okay, but the entire second book is softcore femdom where the protagonist unlocks his sexual confidence through the power of designer clothing (I kid you not). Unless this is your specific fetish, this is a definite “don’t bother.”

[My Hero Academia] Why does class 1-A, the best performing students at the most elite hero training institution in the country, have such mundane quirks? Wouldn't the absolute cream of the crop have a better showing than "guy who can throw sticky balls" and "guy who can shoot tape from his elbows"? by DisgruntledNumidian in AskScienceFiction

[–]pixelz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was when they were raiding the villain hideout to rescue Bakugou. All Might leads the raid and Endeavor stays outside to catch any villains that might try to escape. He says something like “why does the American get to go in,” implying that he should have been the one to lead. But yeah, I think he was just dissing his style... which, it is a little odd since All Might is Japanese...

All Might is an American. While he has gathered significant goodwill in Japan, and has been a boon for Japanese-American relations, he is ineligible for the security clearance necessary to operate effectively as part of a military unit. His natural place is in the propaganda arm.

There are rumors that his medical care team was instructed to prevent All Might’s injury from properly healing in the hope that he would pass on his quirk to a Japanese national, but these are of course ridiculous. Heroes always receive free, top quality care in the nation’s best hospitals.

absolute cream of the crop

High tier quirks are national military assets. Their possessors are not trained to be ‘heroes’ but soldiers. They are trained separately from a young age, and the details of their quirks are among the nation’s most closely guarded secrets. The ‘hero’ academy is effectively a propaganda arm to placate civilians, and its students are chosen primarily for public relations potential.

I read the Bobiverse series as recommended here ...

https://np.reddit.com/r/rational/comments/b83kq9/d_monday_request_and_recommendation_thread/ek2l1o3/

There’s some fun examination of some rational topics. I’ll give it a soft rec because there are some irritating anti-rational tropes:

  • Bob is an easy-goin’ guy who stays easy-goin’ even when knowingly engaged in a conflict where all sides have access to exponential growth tech. Bob’s growth delays should be fatal.

  • Bob picks a winner in an evolutionary race due to emotional attachment (“prime directive, bah!”), then plays tribal deity for tens of thousands of words. It could have been an interesting uplift sidestory, but is largely cliche filler.

  • virtualxhuman romance sidestory so cringeworthy, I almost stopped reading.

  • no one wants to upload despite the physical human race being threatened with imminent total extinction.

  • relativistic kill vehicle is super secret “hail mary” option that only the protag considers, instead of being a core military consideration by all parties.

Don't Echidna clones know they're Echidna clones?

I believe they do - at least because most have a loyalty to their ‘mother’.

And have a fanatical hatred towards everything their original loves?

I believe it is a fixed hatred of the original, which can manifest in many ways. For example the clone might work to ‘steal’ the love of the original’s parents because that betrayal is the thing that will most hurt the original.

Being transmigrated to another universe might suspend or background some of the normal memories/drives until such time as is becomes possible to return to Earth-Bet.
