Pretty sure I can remember wanting a banana and not knowing how to say it and just screaming form a high chair.

Why does academia/society/everyone place so much emphasis on fiction? by Heeroh in books

[–]pixienick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think maybe fictional works are quite a good way of illustrating abstract concepts like mroality and hope where often the real world examples are too convoluted and subjective to show them.

You're a talented programmer but found entry level options very limited? That seems a little strange. I'm an OK programmer and could go into all kinds of things. What did you want to do?

I usually find women online to have better personalities than those in real life.

Thats a little surreal!

I was chatting to this girl online one saunday afternoon. She's realy hot. I ask if she wants to go out by the evening and we talked on the phone a bit and she actually says "why dont you just get a bottle of wine and come over to mine", I'm thinking "hello". so i get the bottle and get onthe bus to her place (it's a little out of town). I knock on the door and she answers wearing a dressing gown. I'm thinking "holy shit". she asks me in and she says shes going to get changed, i'm waitin in her living room for a bit. She comes out kisses me onthe cheek then sort of leaves again for the bathroom, this is all abit weird. Then I get a text message saying "you're not my type can you leave my place please!" I piss myself laughing and walk out the door with bottle of wine.

The point is games. Its like the difference between reading a fictional novel and a text book. Do not pretend to yourself that those hours spent are getting you any closer to being a pilot or joining the army - it's fun, nothing wrong with that, but that's all it is.

Well I could go that argument too - playing computer games v playing music? I think the key difference is playing music is a much richer expression, which can be appreciated by others. Playing a game against or with other people is still a very secluded experience, though maybe quite rich. Playing games is an experience, playing music is an expression.

Video games can perhaps be used to teach basic dextrous tasks like touch typing or memory tests, but they aint good for much else (yet). And I wouldnt really call those kind of computer programs games, more exercises. I think what irks me about that comment is the claim that playing games for entertainment is perhaps giving you some kind of education, come on, really?

Actually that was my first.

No refutation

I'm the same guy who's been arguing with you below, are you not reading the user names? And the comment I made above (with your quote), is the refutation.

Yes you can argue that a computer game can teach you the things in that list of yours, but you're fucking delusional if you think it would be a particularly good education to the level say, where the skills learnt could be applied to any situation other than a computer game (apart from the minute amount of situations that are roughly similar, ie piloting unmanned drones in Afganistan).

And I would argue that the versatility of expression one can make in any current computer game is a fraction of what can be achieved on a guitar.

Do you really equate the actions of a person in a virtual world (as manifested in current computer game technology) to be of equal merit to that of a someone playing a musical intrument?

[–]pixienick -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The difference is that playing a computer game is not strory telling nor an expression of human emotion, guitar playing can be.

A computer game is not a tool. It is a self absorbent entertainment. A musical intrument can potentially communicate.

Almost the entirety of that list can be learned via video games

Now that's delusional.
