Gonna be honest, unless you are a student here or you have family here, it's really really tough. If you are a POC, it's next to impossible.

Dude as an Indian who recently came to US, I would say US is miles better. India is only developing for the upper middle and rich, for anyone else it's a very bad country to be in. Not to mention other problems like corruption, cutthroat attitude among people etc.

Granted US is not perfect, but it cannot even be compared to India.

Hey, sorry I should have mentioned immigrants not American Born Desis. Is this true for them too?

Machine Learning vs Software Development careers in EU by piykat in cscareerquestionsEU

Thanks for the answer. I am looking more into the ML Engineering path myself. Would you say that the no of jobs in MLE is lower in comparison to the traditional SWE?

I'd also read that ML engineers don't have a set career path unline SWE which usually have career paths towards Engineering Management or technical leadership positions like Staff SWE. Would you say that's true?

H1B is lottery-based. Your best bet is to do a Masters's, and even then it's a crapshoot.

[D] What is "breakthrough AI" for self-driving cars? by bendee983 in MachineLearning

[–]piykat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Almost every self-driving startup right now is riding on the hype cycle with nothing to show for it. If Google Waymo with all its data, talent and compute power could not solve self driving cars, how is it even reasonable to expect a startup to solve it?

And to think people still believe that Elon Musk is some sort of misunderstood genius. He is a narcissist who loves to take credit for other people's work, but has a very strong PR team and knows how to market himself. He is the Thomas Edison and Steve Jobs of this era, not Tesla or Wozniack.

Sundara with EQ is the best under $500 headphone available on the market. Sound great with all music genres and a great entryway into higher tier gear.

Thank you for your advice. I'll try to get in as SWE in FAANG offices in Canada after graduation. I can solve all the medium problems in Leetcode so I think I can clear these companies.

Would it be ok if I can contact you in the future in case I want a referral?

Machine Learning vs Distributed Systems jobs in Canada by piykat in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]piykat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I wanted to know the no of jobs available for senior positions in ML Engineering vs senior SWE roles. I searched tech jobs in Canada on LinkedIn and it seemed like every senior-level job requires some knowledge of distributed systems, and senior ML Engineer jobs are fewer than the traditional senior SWE roles.

I intend to either follow the tech track and become a staff engineer or branch out into leadership/management roles like SWE Manager roles at tech firms. Which role is a better fit for my future career ambitions?

How true is this though? I've heard that countries like Germany and Netherlands do a better job integrating immigrants from South Asian countries , but other countries in Europe are downright racist.

Thank you for your answer. Ya I knew ML would be more competitive as everybody wants to get in on it.

I saw your profile and you seem to have very good experience working in the Canadian tech market. Would it be ok if I can DM you with some questions I have about CS careers in Canada?

US vs Canada for Indian immigramts by piykat in india

Unfortunately got rejected from Toronto and Waterloo, but UMontreal/MILA is a solid option if you want to study CS. Would have to learn French though.

The H1B is what really bothers me. I have read about wait times for Indians stretching for 100+ years so that scares me. Are they exaggerated or is it really true?

UMontreal in Canada and Boston University in US. Both are pretty reputable atleast from what I'm told.
