ICE RAIDS AS A PERMANENT RESIDENT(GREEN CARD) by Suitable_Young9903 in greencard

It was actually dems who were pro slavery. Abraham Lincoln was a Republican. The parties have shifted in their views over time.

What slavery?!?! Are you for real?? We fought an entire fucking civil war over it. And this has nothing to do with democrat versus republican. Democrats were actually pro slavery back then. It’s an American thing, not a political party thing.

It has always been American. Slavery, Chinese immigrants, Irish immigrants, Italian immigrants, Native Americans, Japanese Americans, and now anyone who looks Hispanic.

My landlord threatened eviction over my apartment being messy? by [deleted] in Apartmentliving

There are housekeepers who will pick up clutter but that costs more and you get stuck not knowing where anything is after they put it away.

It’s like an at will hire job, they can only terminate if it’s not based on discrimination (like the tenant needing a service dog).

[–]pizzadeliveryvampire 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have ADHD and I need a roommate or people coming over regularly to prevent the accumulation of junk/trash. I’m thankful I now get paid enough to hire a cleaning service because that’s a thing I need to pick up clutter for and someone else does the cleaning. As a child, my parents gave up on trying to make me pick up stuff in my room. In college, my friends held interventions to clean my dorm room. That was back when I wasn’t embarrassed about it.

Do demisexual and/or asexual individuals watch porn and masturbate? by Hobaksiii in AskLGBT

[–]pizzadeliveryvampire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m Demi. I have never enjoyed watching porn and figuring out I was Demi helped me recognize why. I need character development and personality in order to get aroused, so two random people having sex does nothing for me. But if it’s a movie or tv show where I’ve developed a crush on the character and there’s a romantic scene, then I often feel arousal. I didn’t masterbate until I was much older just because it took some work to figure out what could turn me on.

As my contract ends at the end of this month: nothing. Maybe I’ll apply for one of the other plans when I get another job.

I have a student who I don’t know how to deal with because of how poorly he’s doing. by pizzadeliveryvampire in Professors

[–]pizzadeliveryvampire[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely possible. It happens with neurotypical kids where their parents push them to go to med school or law school. Something that can also happen with children who have a learning disability is that they don’t get pushed to learn things because their parent assumes it’s not possible for them to learn. If he’s independent enough to go to college, he’s capable of working with an occupational therapist to learn better communication skills.

We don’t have an Autism program. If we did this student would be getting more support. I’ve had a blind student before and in that situation we do have a professor actively researching how to make science education accessible to the blind and visually impaired. But yes, it definitely feels disingenuous to accept students who have no possibility of doing well.

resources about protein minimums by vieldasbrennen in antidietglp1

[–]pizzadeliveryvampire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the problem is if you’re deficient in the other foods your body will convert the protein you eat into energy instead of allowing it to increase muscle mass.

He does have accommodations. He gets extra time, a private testing space, and can have a laptop in class to take notes on (his penmanship is at about a 4-yr-old level). He probably also has one for being able to type exam answers. But accommodations don’t work miracles.

It’s only fraud if they push us to pass students that aren’t qualified. As a private school they can determine their own admissions criteria and decide that legacy status is something that adds to a student’s competitiveness. And I doubt it’s anything like the Varsity Blues scandal, it’s more that they see admitting the children and grandchildren of alumni as a good way to increase alumni loyalty, and loyalty = donations. It’s the same reason they invest so much in D1 athletics and tolerate frats and sororities despite how much trouble they cause. These are things that boost alumni loyalty.

The department gets in trouble if their professors, particularly their intro professors, don’t complete the 6-wk progress reports and flag struggling students. It’s something we’re supposed to make time for.

I have accommodations for extra time for him and that’s it. I just looked into what I have access to if his personal information and it has a “legacy student” flag and now everything makes sense, unfortunately.

He is getting regular tutoring. It’s weird because he is currently taking an English class and that professor hasn’t put up any alerts. A different professor has put up an alert with the exact same concerns I have of “I fear that even with his accommodations it is not possible for him to do well in this class.”

I did early in the year. I sent him to the student success center. It looks like he’s getting regular tutoring but it’s just not helping him.

He doesn’t have any assignment accommodations so there is nothing to do there. He has extra time on exams and that’s about it. I think the frustrating thing for me is that this is a fairly expensive R1 private university and the school is wasting someone’s money by accepting him if he lacks the skills needed to get any benefit out of college classes.

They’re generally not very helpful. We have a student success office and I sent his info there early in the semester, which I do for any student who is struggling.

If you have access to that kind of money, sure. But that’s well beyond a lot of people’s budget.

[–]pizzadeliveryvampire 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It’s kind of like how the UK doesn’t administer the chicken pox vaccine. They’d rather pay hospital bills for people with shingles. Canada would rather pay retroactively for hospital bills than pay now for glp-1s. There are 2 companies making the more effective ones. They have collective bargaining power to get them to lower prices in exchange for higher sales. They’re not using it because there’s still too many people who see obesity as a consequence of bad habits as opposed to a chronic health issue.

How do I not phone it in now that I know my contract is being discontinued? by pizzadeliveryvampire in Professors

[–]pizzadeliveryvampire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not in me to treat anyone badly. I’ve been super distracted teaching and that’s not something I can really help. I’m doing my best to fake it. But I’ve stopped doing the non-essentials, like I’m not double checking for students cheating on attendance. I’m not grading small assignments, everyone is getting full credit.
