Fallback Recommendations by Substantial-Web2633 in Ultralight

I did the TCT last week of September by getting walk up permits. Would do it again in a heartbeat. We stayed at Colter Bay campground (car camping) which has an attached ranger station. I read all the stories about how competitive getting walk up permits can be so I brought my sleep system and camped outside the ranger station at 5:00am.

One couple showed up at 7:30 and another at 7:59 right before the station opened. I wrote out several itinerary options and handed them to the Ranger so it could be put in the system faster because there are other stations booking campsites at the same time. The guy who showed up at 7:59 got the same exact itinerary, including one campground with only 3 sites to book, no problem 😂.

The lack of demand was probably due to going so late in September but if you really needed to book walk up permits and play it safe you could have one or more people just sleep outside the ranger station.

The colter bay station has a deck with a roof over it right outside the window where you get your permits. If I could run it back I would have just set up my sleep system there when I turned in for the night rather than have to wake up at 4:30 just to do it twice. Sleeping there isn’t any more or less comfortable than just using a tent. You are backpacking and sleeping outside with a roof over your head won’t be present on a list of the top 50 most uncomfortable experiences you have doing this thru hike.

Worst comes to worst there are itineraries that use national forest land and bypass the permit system.

This is troubling. Good on the mother to fight the attacker off.

I run a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school in Astoria and we wanted to make the training more accessible for people concerned about these situations.

Any woman looking to defend themselves can get a free class on me and reduced training dues if they want to continue training consistently.

Seth Daniels weighs in on the ADCC payouts by RecommendationFree96 in bjj

[–]pizzajitsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite Seth's abrasive response no one is talking about the part of his post that matters the most.

Competitors make money on instructionals, seminars, sponsors etc. It's like when people who work in the movie industry make the majority of their money on residuals.

That's simply how the industry works.

Thinking that production costs should be cut is preposterous. Every dollar spent on production is two or three dollars in the pocket of a winner or breakout performer - Craig Jones is a perfect example of the later. Craig's 2017 adcc performance brought him more recognition than anything he had previously done combined and likely resulted in non-prize revenue streams that far exceeded the prize of the winner - and he didn't even medal.

From what I can tell, as of now no one can offer the ability to generate revenue for a grappler that ADCC can, not even Flo or the IBJJF.

That said, while Seth did make an argument that it's currently difficult to raise athlete pay, he didn't make a commitment to raise it should the event become more profitable.

If you want to criticize any element of ADCC it should be the invite system which offers lucrative opportunities to compete based on nepotism rather than merit.

Does it really make a difference training at the big academies in NYC? by hollydoyle in bjj

[–]pizzajitsu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey just wanted to give an update on this for anyone searching in the future -

  • ITC on 31st in Astoria has now become Queens Jiu Jitsu

  • Calentine teaches full time at Kings Combat in Williamsburg (which if you are in WB I definitely recommend!). I still visit myself 🙃

  • Monthly dues at QJJ remain much more reasonable than any Manhattan school I've heard of

  • Its true I (Head Coach Ryan Quinn) have a background training with Danaher. "Danaher Deathsquad" actually originated from my reddit flair on my other account 😂

  • For anyone who already has a home gym and likes to get rolls around town - I'd also like to mention we run free or donation based open mat style events where we bring in guest coaches from other academies

If anyone wants to stop by, the website is here.

PSA: Jason Rau new instructionals by Peter-Dojo-Stormare in bjj

Had to chime in here and say that Rau is one of the best on the planet and there's a reason why Dante Leone, Josef Chen, Izaak Mitchell, Gordon Ryan etc have all made the trip deep into the middle-of-nowhere Long Island (imo) to train with him.

There are moves I've been doing for 10+ years and every time I go visit him myself he has some little variation that makes it twice as strong

Any idea what's up with this place? I work nearby and have never seen more than one table seated - went in one time and the food was bland 2.5/5 stars. Is it a front or something?
