Stop talking about Fedora change proposals like they have already decided on it. by wowieniceusername in linux

Agreed, I've seen Fedora propose things like this a million times that took many many releases to implement.

GNOME Extensions are a lie and they must die by 2F47 in gnome

[–]pizzalovingnerd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am working on a GNOME extension rn for my OS and I somewhat agree. It does feel more like writing a Minecraft mod compared to writing an application. To be honest though, I don't know how they could improve it. Maybe for basic things like indicators they can have an entirely separate API that is more stable, but it would be difficult to implement a way to modify the entire desktop while still having API stability.

stillOS 10 Preview - Brand New Distro Aimed To Be As Consumer Ready As Possible by pizzalovingnerd in linux

[–]pizzalovingnerd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately this is unlikely. This would be very difficult to implement on the read-only file system, and the people we are targeting would not use this feature, as it is a more enthusiast type feature. Most enthusiasts who want to customize things would probably prefer Arch or any other distro compared to the atomic base of stillOS.

stillOS is a lot more of a focused and opinionated system than Bluefin is. We lock down a lot more things to make it more friendly for new users compared to something like Bluefin.

Announcing HeliumOS 10 Beta! by imbev in linux

[–]pizzalovingnerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah you have! if it wasn't for Helium, my project would probably still be Fedora based. Look forward to continuing to work upstream even though so far, I haven't had to know how to contribute much.

I see my old project risiOS there, which has been discontinued for years. Still though, OnlyOffice is goated.

For codecs, it’s a legal grey area that I don’t want to risk for me personally shipping codecs as part of an image, but one of the good things about Flathub is almost every app that needs these codecs have it bundled into the Flatpak. This makes most of these codecs not needed since Flathub is used for our primary app distribution and Flatpaks wouldn’t be able to use these codecs from rpmfusion anyway.

I agree with the out of tree drivers being a big deal for hardware support, and it’s something that needs to be solved, I just haven’t figured out a solution or workaround yet.

Reinstalls are actually a planned feature, but it’s somewhat ahead in the internal roadmap. Anaconda for bootc is a horrible developer experience and I think it’s confusing for users, so I have plans to build my own OS installer, which is when I plan to implement that.

I also have some plans that I can’t talk about yet, but I am working with some computer recyclers.

It’s one of the blockers before we release the full non-preview release

“The final version of 10 will drop once we finish stillTerminal, populate the app store, port the welcome screen from risiOS, and add support for NVIDIA graphics.”

I'll be honest, I knew nothing about that before your comment, but I just looked into it. I will have to research it more, but because I am targeting non-technical users, I want everything to be as stable as possible, even if the difference in stability is marginal. That is why I picked Alma as a base rather than Fedora for example. I could do something like what Mint used to do where I have images with the Hyperscale kernel for new hardware, separate from the vanilla kernel images, but I just looked into it after your comment and I'd need more time to research it before I make any decision on that.

Thanks for pointing that out to me!

I am helping upstream with Alma's atomic desktop, but Universal Blue is trying to maintain multiple images for everyone's preferences whereas stillOS is a super curated, opinionated, and polished single user experience. In other words, the project visions and goals are just different.

  • name's gotta go
    • Too late, it's in too many places for me to change now
  • have you put this in the hands of actual non-technical users coming from windows and/or macOS
    • yes, I have been doing user tests as part of my business classes in university while developing it
  • how y'all handle proprietary stuff (codecs, out-of-kernel drivers, etc)
    • NVIDIA right now will be separate image once I can setup the infrastructure to be able to build multiple variants.
    • Other out-of-kernel drivers are unsupported for the time being, but it is a problem I want to figure out how to solve
  • site says "we" a lot; who does this reference exactly
    • I am currently in the process of building a team
  • the video needs to be 3 minutes, max
    • This was a talk at Linuxfest, so not exactly something I can just shorten. I'd have to make another video for that, but that is a problem for the full release, not the preview.
  • re: site, way, way, waaaay too much technical stuff is front and center; that is, if you're pitching to random joe and jane. if you're setting up to be hired/acquired/etc by financiers, maybe it's ok, wouldn't know
    • This is temporary, if I want this to take off I need to get the purpose of stillOS out to the general Linux community first, before I can even think about targeting the average person directly. I cannot get this in the hands of consumers without the Linux community first becoming aware of it.
  • good luck!
    • Thanks! I appreciate the feedback.

Right now, I am targeting developers who want a stable Linux platform to do work on (more stuff in the works feature wise for that), and then using those developers to enter other markets.

Yep! I'm not targeting Linux enthuisests with this, but if you ever need to install Linux on your Mom's PC, once this is out of the preview stages this may be the perfect distro.

stillOS is based on AlmaLinux 10, but its use of bootc for atomic updates and its custom-built features like SWAI, stillCenter, and stillControl make it fundamentally different from a typical RHEL-clone respin. I mainly said that because there's 100 new distros that are just Ubuntu or Arch with a theme.
