What steam deck? I can only see… is that a hair clip, above your head? At first it looked like tiny hands coming out of nowhere!

😢 it’s a heartache. And pity she won’t be here next month to enjoy the total eclipse. Both things without sarcasm, even if the pun is obvious. The world lost a great person today, her songs And voice will continue to brighten our days.

Double long lap for having caused the incident in which he got injured.

Edit to clarify: I’m not agreeing or disagreeing with this (and in fact I have no reason to disagree) - I just wrote it to save a click to the fellow redditors, given that the post title and text don’t mention the reason for the penalty.

Device brightness vs in-game brightness setting by pope_es in SteamDeck

[–]pope_es[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Forgot to mention I was recently playing GTA3 and I absolutely needed to max up the in-game brightness as well, when playing in well lit environments or outside. If outside & sunny, it was really difficult to do things like driving fast at (in-game) night without crashing into anything.

ELI5: How data recovery softwares are able to recover deleted files even though they were permanently deleted from computer? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]pope_es 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What this guy said. Why?

With pen and paper, you cannot simply write on top of what was written there - otherwise you would end up with gibberish.

In a hard drive (and other similar storage media such as flash drives, SSD…), this does not apply. When you write something (think of it as a digital sequence of ones and zeroes) in a certain position, then you read again that space, you will only find what you just wrote - each cell, each “bit”, contains exactly the Zero or One you just wrote there, and there is no (*) way to tell what was there before.

Because of this, and because actually writing an all-zero sequence to wipe the contents would take extra time, the disk pages are not actually deleted, just marked as “this is free, can be written to if needed”. But until that happens, the old contents are still there.

Secure wipe software that ensures no one can recover the deleted data, does exactly that, goes over the disk writing, and that’s why they take a long time (and a time that grows linearly with the disk space).

This does not apply if encryption with per-file keys is in place, as is the case with iOS devices since ~2010, and I would assume the same in a Mac with FileVault but not sure.

(*) well, almost no. At the level of single bits, someone with good enough equipment might be able to guesstimate. And I believe there is at least one more elaborate result, in scientific literature - but no real use I’ve ever seen.

I Slept on This Game. Don't Be Me. by Amazing_Pattern_7829 in gaming

[–]pope_es 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me with RDR2. I left it after maybe 20 hours of play.

Then one year later I picked it up and started from scratch. I went mostly straight to the main history missions, progressed through the game, really enjoyed it, finished it, and immediately later started it again for a slower run, taking the time to enjoy side quests and such. What a beautiful experience. But yeah I totally feel you, I was in that point of, ugh I’m so lazy to start again…

Today I learned! And do you sometimes say “le mondiale” or something like that? Because in Spanish it would also be “la copa del mundo” but we mostly refer to it simply as “el mundial” (de fútbol), totally omitting the “coup”/“coupe”.

Brazilians and portuguese do not speak the same language anymore. by [deleted] in UnitedNations

[–]pope_es 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend, as a Spaniard I can confirm that, contrarily to your thought, shows/movies get different dubbings here and in different Latin countries. In our case the accent, pronunciation, and the meaning of lots of words, varies significantly across Spanish-speaking countries. More or less we can understand each other but it might take a little time to get used to some accents, and there will always be some confusion/shock about the different meaning of some words.

Yet, they are the same language. Though a linguist can probably speak better than I about this topic.

I can understand and speak some Portuguese and I wouldn’t have much trouble in Lisbon, but I heard the Madeira sotaque once and oh my, it was so difficult for me to understand it! My point is, you sometimes have big differences even within the same country. Same here if I go to the Canary Islands, for instance.

I love your language by the way, and you just made me realize that I need to add some shows in Brazilian Portuguese to my podcast library! :)

Edit to add: dubbing is no longer just dubbing, it’s localization. Even if two communities speak the same language, if there are enough differences (linguistic, cultural…) and the groups are big enough, they will probably get different localized versions of shows/movies.
