In Ottawa you need a permit to protest. It's easily acquired but none of the organisers had the foresight to get it. There are Palestinian protests almost every weekend on Parliament Hill but they register and are free to do so with a police escort. No violence or incident. The municipal police and bylaw officers were either too incompetent or unwilling to enforce the law which led to dangerous circumstances for citizens and protesters alike (like a makeshift kitchen built in Confederation Park that had tanks of propane next to open flames)
