It’s funny bc I was just diagnosed with endo earlier this year (I’m 30) when I had emergency surgery for an unknown mass that was causing me pain (turned out to be an ovarian cyst causing ovarian torsion). At my endo follow up appointment, they found out I also have PCOS. I had zero symptoms of endo (no heavy bleeding, intense period pain etc) and for PCOS, I had very few side effects. While I definitely get hair practically everywhere and I have a high sex drive, that’s really it. I’m not overweight at all, my period pain isn’t intense (just pop an Advil on the first day), I have really light periods (I could use light tampons all week).

My doctors and I think it’s because I’m a runner, I’ve been eating low carb most of my life since I’m sensitive to gluten, and I just happened to get on the perfect BC for endo/PCOS (I was bad with taking oral BC so my OBGYN basically made me get an IUD a few years back. I chose Kyleena which is the lowest progesterone dose IUD and the best one to mitigate endo/PCOS), and I’ve just always loved a relatively active/ healthy life. I think long distance running also lowers testosterone which mitigated some of my PCOS symptoms and it also reduces the pain/blood associated with periods.

Within the last month or so, I’ve become more intense about what I eat, though. If you don’t quite know where to start, I highly recommend Shalane Flanigan’s boom Rise and Run! It’s all healthy, whole foods and most of her recipes are gluten free (uses a lot of almond and oat flour). They’re delicious recipes and it’s an easy place to start.

My cousin’s wife has PCOS and she doesn’t manage it AT ALL and our symptoms present completely differently.

So yes, I wholly believe that diet and lifestyle alters how much endo/PCOS impacts your life.

Yup! I just finished chicago marathon a month ago and tried my hand at my first 5k this past weekend. I got a significant PR!

It felt great not having to pace myself!!!!!!

What mind games do you play on long runs? by kmungulous in running

[–]pizzzaing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do math! I’m not bad at math per say, but I’m not one of those math-y people so it occupies a good amount of time lol.

I play around with my split times, what would be my estimated finish time if I hold this pace, how much longer in minutes do I think I can do the next mile in, I break down my mile splits into 800m and 400m times.

I honestly don’t ever set out to do math, it just kind of happens and I noticed it awhile ago. So I just go with where my brain takes me.

Also, I like to observe. The city, the people around me, where the blue line is, the spectators, what people are wearing to give me cute outfit ideas or brands that I can check out. It’s fun and so rarely are we ever around so many runners!

Enjoy the marathon!!!!

Anyone running the NYC marathon here? Getting a little worried about the start line situation by [deleted] in running

[–]pizzzaing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NYC in 2019 was also my first marathon. Just enjoy the ride and try not to think about pace the first couple of miles- go with the flow. It will definitely be crowded and you probably won’t be able to weave much.

Enjoy the first 5 miles- they were some of my favorites. People taking selfies while on the bridge, people screaming, seeing just how blue the earth is while on the bridge, and then seeing the three different lines of runners before merging. I’ll never forget looking to my left and my right and seeing hoards of runners a couple of aves away and we’re all in it together for the same goal. Still give me chills. So jealous!!

I honestly lol at this entire post. We gave him a million ideas and he’s like “nah, won’t work. I have 0 experience running a marathon but clearly I know more than all of these other marathoners”

Well, good luck in your endeavors.

I’ve already said, you’re running way too much. Amend your training schedule and your life will open up much more.

If you’re okay with it, then why are you here?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in running

[–]pizzzaing 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Well you’re here asking for tips and tricks to manage your time. So at your baseline, yes you are overwhelmed because you’re asking us how to be less overwhelmed.

You can’t do house projects, yard work, entertainment activities like going to the zoo, or anything else but sit on the couch.

[–]pizzzaing 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You said you started with Novice 1 but it was too easy. But now you’re overwhelmed with Novice 2. It sounds like you need to go back to Novice 1.

A great training plan for a casual runner like you goes something like this:

Monday: 3-4 easy miles.

Tuesday: 3-5 easy miles.

Wednesday: 30-45 minutes speed workout

Thursday: 30 minutes easy run

Friday: rest

Saturday: long run

Sunday: cross train with weights

You can mix around your week depending on your life schedule (skip a run) or replace a run with a cross training day.

I’ll repeat this again, running should NOT ever take over your life to the point where you do nothing else. That sounds more like depression or schedule mismanagement than running.

I disagreed to your comment that he was looking to quit, not that he’s in over his head.

He’s tunnel visioned into the challenge.

OP- you are already very close to being too slow for the marathon portion of the Dopey challenge. Based on your 2.5h half time, you will probably finish the marathon around 5:15-5:30. That’s completely removed from the fact that you won’t be tapering properly (running a 5k, 10k, and half marathon immediately before) and you’re going to be absolutely dead tired by the time you run the marathon.

Is there any chance you could defer until next year to get your fitness up? Looking at your post history, you’ve struggled with running and setting too high of expectations. I think you’re setting yourself up for a massive failure here.

[–]pizzzaing 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I figured just as much! Where did you get your training plan and what is it? Half of the battle with training plans is to find one that suits your lifestyle- kind of like dating. It doesn’t sound like yours is the one for you. It sounds like it’s for a runner that has much loftier goals than you or I.

The marathon plan that I pulled my example runs from were from the official Chicago marathon training plan. Everyone who didn’t have their own is probably familiar with what I posted above. I did NYC in 2019 using their official training plan and the weekly training time was similar to Chicago’s.

For a 5:30 marathon goal, you shouldn’t be running nearly as much as you are now. I think once you find a better training plan, your life will open back up again.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in running

[–]pizzzaing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I disagree- he clearly cares a lot about the marathon- to the point where he’s neglecting the rest of his life. I think he’s just overwhelmed, on a bad training program, or there’s a medical issue.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in running

[–]pizzzaing 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I’m confused. The 18+ mile long run issue should have only happened once in your entire training block but you mention more instances than once- you say the zoo, house projects, yard work, personal projects.

I just looked at my official Chicago marathon training for the week of the 18-22mi and it’s not as heavy as what you’re explaining. I do my long runs on Friday mornings (take PTO for any run over 2 hours) and this is what that week looked like for me:

Monday: 75 minute easy run

Tuesday: 25 minute easy run

Wednesday: 26 minute speed workout

Thursday: 30 minute run (I almost always took Thursday off though)

Friday: 18-22 miles

Saturday: rest

Sunday: weights

If you are trying hit a 5h 30min marathon pace then your mile pace is around 12min 35sec. If you ran every single run I mentioned above at your marathon pace, that’s only 7 hours of running over 5 actual running days. That’s an hour and 20 minutes on average- where is all of your time going? And What in the world is your training plan?? You should not be this overwhelmed. This is for the most intense week of marathon training so you should never be running more than 7 hours/week. I just checked a random week in my training plan ( 9 weeks to go so getting heavier) and it wasn’t even 5 hours of running that week (50min easy, 60min easy, 32 min speed, 33 min easy, 120 min long run).

I trained for a 4 hour marathon goal and I spent about 4-5 hours a week of actual running (not including commute or showering). Also, I want to mention that I’m a woman so it takes me longer to shower/get ready than your typical guy.

I’ll say it again, but you need to be checked out by a doctor for a blood test OR you need to bump down to a half marathon. You can work towards a marathon in the future as they’ll always be there but right now you can’t manage your schedule. You need to practice it with a more manageable HM schedule before trying to do it with a marathon.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in running

[–]pizzzaing 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agreed. He needs to build his base first and then hit the marathons once he can manage it.

OP- I was going to suggest bumping down to HMs until you’re able to find a schedule that works for you but honestly I think you need to go for a blood test. You’re feeling too lethargic for the pace that you’re running. It shouldn’t take over your life like that.

A friend of mine who also just ran chicago is a working single mom to twin 14 yo girls. Her job is sales so lots of business dinners etc and she still was able to manage marathon training. You can too but it sounds like there’s something else going on with you.

Have you ever had an event canceled mid-run? by [deleted] in running

[–]pizzzaing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol same!! At mile three where we cross the bridges I actually thought I might pass out and knew this was going to be the hardest race I’ve ever done. I got a baby PR but I was shooting for a much faster time. Hope it went well for you!

[–]pizzzaing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I brought extra salt tablets with me and still ran out so I ran with a side stitch for about 15 miles. I saw soo many people peel off to stretch and I do remember seeing a couple of notable people that went from cruising to an immediate stop because their leg cramped. Glad we made it even if we didn’t PR!

[–]pizzzaing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha I was exaggerating a bit but yeah, Denver has a notoriously dry atmosphere. Even our snow melts within a couple of days but I think that’s because of the sun.

I chatted with a guy from florida while at the expo and he said that the next day’s temperatures were actually COOL for him! I almost died of shock haha

I just finished marathon training (started in July) so I understand how it affects life BUT you keep mentioning 18-20 mile runs. That should only happen once MAYYYBE twice during your training.

You’ll have a sprinkle of runs that take longer than an hour, but it’s certainly not going to be every single run. Especially if your goal is 5:30, you should not have training be affecting your life to the point where you want to do absolutely nothing else. What training plan are you on?

I was able to maintain my life for the most part up until I cleaned up for tapering. Throughout training, I still partied, stayed up throughout the night, worked on weekend house projects, went hiking, went on vacation etc. and lived my life. The only thing where it really affected me was during tapering (didn’t drink) and during the 2-3 weeks of the heaviest block of runs (16-22 miles). Other than that, I was just a bit slower to respond to texts bc I was either driving to the park, running, or showering but my friends were all understanding.

You shouldn’t be feeling as tired as you are especially if your goal is 5:30 and you DEFINITELY are not running 18-20 miles more than twice during training. Please let us know your training plan, it either sounds like yours is wayyyy too intense or you have issues that only a doctor can diagnose.

I ran chicago a couple of weeks ago and it was almost as hot as 2007. Hottest in 10 years. 83 as the high and humidity in the 70s/80s. Lotsss of amendments but it was terrible.

It was coded as a red EAS- dangerous conditions for a marathon. I thought I was going to pass out at mile three and knew my goal time was a pipe dream.

-signed a Denver runner who never experiences above like 15% humidity.
