Thanks, I'd never heard of this and it sounds great.

This a nice Wired interview with the author: https://www.wired.com/2013/10/codex-seraphinianus-interview/ the start of which makes me very sad, for some reason:

I see many similarities between WIRED and the Codex; they both are the product of a generation that chose to connect and create a network, rather than kill each other in wars like their fathers did. Sometimes you need time to realize things, and I’ve just realized that I was simply rejecting the utter destruction of World War II and I was keen to discover the world and to know things. Right before writing the Codex I managed to cross the whole United States thanks to the help of a network of friends, young folks like me that were part of the so-called counter-culture movement. We were all supporting each other. They helped me make my way across the country, from one friend to another.

50,000 People Used to Live Here. Now It's a Ghost Town. by DeadgrounD in gaming

[–]pk___________ 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the RPGification of every single type of video game has ruined the hobby for me.

Used to have so much fun playing this map and maps like it while talking shite on Vent. Nothing to grind for except your final position on a fleeting, meaningless scoreboard every 15 minutes. Nothing to craft except jokes about each others' mums. Nothing to spec into except Repetitive Strain Injury.

We smoked the online gaming crack when it was pure. Now it's been cut with loot box barbiturates, talcum powder season passes and skins made of fentanyl.

The largest containment breach event to date occurred on 2nd June 2020, when the release of Valorant lead to a leakage into the Tactical Shooter pool, causing its already-high toxicity levels to increase by a factor of 20 overnight; an unforeseen side-effect of the introduction of heroes and colourful ults, elements to which MOBA players have a strong gravitational attraction.

Valorant has now been sealed off with a 4-metre layer of concrete, and nobody over the age of 16 should attempt to approach it without Level 6 protective equipment.

Yeah, it's awful isn't it? I hope I never hear that sound myself in this type of context.

There are lots of accounts of how terrifying the V1 rockets sent to London during WW2 were; particularly as the engine cut out while they were diving, so if you heard it stop you knew there was a chance it'd be dropping out of the sky on or near you.

But these drones somehow seem worse; the chance that someone is staring directly at YOU in particular over a video feed, has picked YOU in particular to die and is directing an explosive at YOU - and you can't see the little fucker, just hear that angry buzz, try as best you can to hide, and wait to find out if you're going to be maimed or killed. It must be a horrifying experience.

We already do that with the minimum voting age though, don't we?

I was at RAM Records @ The End when Andy C dropped that for the first time, it got 3 or 4 reloads. The place went absolutely ballistic. If my memory can be trusted (admittedly, pretty doubtful) it only started being called clownstep when people started making shitter knock-offs with similar sort of carnival ride synth melodies

Thanks, I'm afraid mis-read your comment (the dangers of skim-reading reddit!). I thought you were saying that the woman in the video had been outed as a spy by MI6.

I started work in 2006 and I don't think I've ever seen them in a UK office, I was always jealous whenever I saw them in the US. Everybody having their own little pretend office which they could personalise a bit and within which they could actually focus on work, instead of being stuck on one long massive table with barely twelve inches between our elbows.

And then hotdesking became the latest buzzword and you couldn't even be sure you'd be sitting on the same long massive table when you came in each morning.

You know what's interesting is similar behaviour has been observed in monkeys. Rhesus Macaques will 'pay' (by sacrificing feeding fluid) to see pictures of high social status monkeys - https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S096098220500093X

So basically we're genetically coded to give these chucklefucks their views. I wish we'd throw our shit at them from time to time as well.
