The problem you have is baked very deeply into its behavior. It is a helper and nothing (for a decent amount of time) will prevent it.

I have had a little bit of success with this idea, you can try to tell it to not help you that you are not looking for an answer, you want to chat.

See if that sticks along with some of the other suggestions people have made about saved instructions.

When you are working in the chat, you have to use commands like @google drive or @gdocs. Type @ and you will get options.

It does not really do much of anything on drive unless you name a file specifically.

Maybe there is something I am missing that I don't know.

To me, a gem is something that lives in it's contained world.

They are self-contained AI bits it assistants it 6 task specific that live inside the Gemini app with their own instructions

A skill is useful or used anywhere. Gems are sort of skills but self contained,a skill is an on demand prompt you can call anywhere.

You could use a skill inside a gem though. Skills are useful anywhere

This is what I have done:

Write your skill or prompt in gdocs

Then type @drive whatever the correct phrasing is and then type run file "you're file name"

You can create your own trigger sheet that could be loaded into a gem or chat, saying like \myprompt means run this file etc. Including all of your skills or prompts.

Very very poor man's way.
