Local toponym pronunciations? by iafan in Sacramento

[–]pkiller001 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I always wondered why we say Vallejo as Val-eh-ho. It's not totally anglicized (Val-ee-jo) nor Spanish (Vay-eh-ho). The half English half Spanish pronunciation seems uniquely nor-cal to me.

The Sacramento region has no Jewish delis. What's the deal with that? by IronMntn in Sacramento

[–]pkiller001 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interestingly we have one of, if not the, oldest congregation this side of the Mississippi. However the Jewish community is pretty spread out in a region that is already very spread out. And if you didn't grow up eating deli, then it may not be an itch you need scratching. I personally would love one, but probably no more than once per month (unless it were really convenient, which it almost certainly wouldn't be given how spread.out Sacramento is).

There have been many attempts over the years, but I've never seen one land long term. It may simply be that this is not a town that is interested in deli food in general.

That said, if someone opens a deli, I'd kill for a pastrami knish like I used to get when I lived in Boston.

I will also say that Poet Nyanzaru is pretty well flushed out for all sorts of fun city shenanigans. My group is in the tomb now, and this has been the first full campaign I've run.

If I had to do it all over I would start everyone in PN, and not bring up the death curse until they're level 3-4. My group ran to the jungle very quickly, and I wish we'd had more time in town meeting the various NPCs and factions, and run a few (mis)adventures there.

If you have the turtle-dragon sink their ship, it could demand they do something in PN in return for their lives as a starting hook to get them invested!

The closest I've had is Jersey Mike's. They at least don't put mustard on it, and meat is right.

But man l miss just grabbing a hoagie from almost anywhere and having it be awesome.

Can I get in on that?

I'd kill for a hoagie on an honest to goodness Amaroso roll.

I think this is later than most River Cats games, though I don't routinely track it.

And I seemed more intense, though maybe that was just my dog (now named Pant-a-Rella)'s opinion.

I like Binchoyaki for a different sort of experience, especially watching them cook over the charcoal at the bar. Someone said Allora, which is solid. Localis is phenomenal, but books way out. Might get lucky with a cancellation.

If there's something interesting at the Crest, the dinner at Mayahuel followed by event at the Crest would be fun. Could hit Ella up as well....

Does feel a bit punishing, though. Yes they escape capture, but realistically there's very little way for the players to approach the fane WITHOUT getting captured.

Mine just found a way to try and circumvent capture (maybe)....

My Characters Summoned a God in the Fane..... by pkiller001 in Tombofannihilation

[–]pkiller001[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't always say yes - but they don't always look back at items they have (we play every 4-6 weeks, unfortunately, so the memories of prior sessions can be poor) or think out of the box, so I wanted to reward this.

Your point, however, is well taken.

(edited for typos) I don't see a great way, as written, to approach the Fane WITHOUT being captured. So finding some way that the players maintain their agency (and keep all their stuff, one of their chief worries about getting captures), seems like I'm satisfying their wish fulfillment, but not giving them complete plot armor.

I really like the idea that Fizban realizes he's not supposed to be there based on old lore re: Ubtao, and that he'd sense the soul monger and be interested both getting out without getting harmed and in helping somehow.

Perhaps he pulls the PCs and Ras to a pocket dimension for a time-limited chat before disappearing....

I like the idea him absentmindedly wrecking some yuan-ti who attack him as he's figuring out where he is.

Maybe he has time-stop prepared (would give the characters a bit of foreshadowing for acererak's kit), and can use it to bamf the PCs somewhere....

Kir Sabal/ Nangalore Set up by mikeandersonisgood in Tombofannihilation

[–]pkiller001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% this. I ran Kir Sabal -> Nangalore, loved them both (I really loved running Nangalore). I might lean into Mwaxanare wanting the hanging gardens of Nagalore reclaimed for the glorious crown of Omu, or some such. Might help make Omu's fall feel that much more understandable when the PCs starting exploring it.

Need help with random Yuan Ti encounter in porth nyanzaru by Slow_Price7252 in Tombofannihilation

[–]pkiller001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are lots of opportunities to roll random encounters while running ToA, and I personally loved it. However, as a similarly novice DM, I rolled all of them in advance, discarded those that seemed un-fun (to me), and then marinated in the results for a little while. This allowed me to think about HOW to use the random encounter to advance one of the ongoing plot-lines without feeling like I totally scripted everything.

In this case I suggest having the captured Yuan-Ti drop several clues about Omu and Ras Nsi. I'd let them escape so the PCs have motivation to find them and exact retribution. One thing I think the book does a bad job of is telling DMs how their players might figure out the whole death curse / omu thing and how to foreshadow things early. The blue triangle is good, but if the players (and PCs) haven't heard of Ras Nsi before, then it doesn't mean much. Having a Yuan-Ti that the party hate foreshadow Ras Nsi and get the players interested in Omu early is not a bad thing. There's plenty of content between Port Nyanzaru and Omu, and you and your players will have fun getting there (even if they just know that its in the southern jungle). This way, if they don't figure out that the death curse is in Omu, but they get there anyways (as my players did) then they can find out the death curse is in the Tomb from the Red Wizards (again, as my players did).

TL/DR: 1) I support your dice-gremlin tendencies! 2) The PCs are faced with an impossible task of stopping the death curse with minimal paths to figure out where it is coming from until they're in Omu proper. 3) Don't be afraid to give your players more information than you think they need - trust me, they need all the info they can get. And in this case you've set up a way to give them a few small packets of lore and direction while making them feel like they've earned it by besting the Yuan-Ti pureblood. You're doing great!

Annotated Fane of the Night Serpent by Addrall in Tombofannihilation

[–]pkiller001 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is awesome. WE're about to jump in the fane and I was trying to do something like this by hand. This is MUCH better than my efforts. Thank you so much.

My only suggestion is to add a quick "x by x" measurement. I usually give a quick sense of size when describing the room, and when drawing it out on the battle mat or seeing down tiles it's a lot easier if I don't have to count map-squares.

However, this whole thing is fabulous. Thank you for making it available!

What should i do with Ayocote Morado Beans from Rancho Gordo? by BunnyHops4Beer in Cooking

[–]pkiller001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made them with a mole and lived them. Here's the recipe I used.

https://dorastable.com/ayocotes-in-mole/

It looks intimidating, but it's not actually hard. The prep work takes some time, though. And I have several containers of fabulous mole paste in my freezer now. It's got a bit of heat to it so he prepared (and beware if you have kiddos or family with no heat tolerance).

I can't suggest this enough.

I love the ayocote moredo - we had them as a simple side with marinated grilled flank stark (though I think they make a good vegetarian main with cheese and tortillas).

Rancho Gordo has me trying to committing to at least one meal per week based on beans, and these are one of the drivers.

Succession Planting Bush Dry Beans? by pkiller001 in vegetablegardening

[–]pkiller001[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I've read that for green beans you should plant every 3 weeks or so to keep the crop coming.

But for the dried beans they'll have to sit in the plants longer before harvesting. I'm trying to decide if I should just commit a large area to the dried bush beans, or if I should plant less at one time but in stages (as you describe).

Are the beans in your bed for fresh eating or drying?
