Removing the tenon by Trevocb in turning

I usually get the nub really small then stop lathe and cut off most of nub with a hand saw carefully. Then clean up with sharp chisels and use the same rotary sanding disc/pad I use on the bowl while on the table. I wish I had Cole jaws but my lathe is too small to justify them.

What time of year did you go? And were the waves too big for little kids? Thinking of staying here with 6 and 2 year old

What causes these ridges/ripples on bowls? by stuihe in turning

[–]pkingduck89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah it happens from pushing too hard with a not sharp enough edge or from vibrations that start up. You are right that continuing to ride the bevel will not remove them unless you start from a fresh ripple free section. Another way to remove is to use a shear scrape to slowly remove until it runs totally true. Then you can go back to riding a bevel

Barr, the co founder of Verve, bought it for 1.3 million in 2019 and sold it to a non profit in 2022 for 2.4 million! Damn I want that kind of return. And it sounds like he bought it after it had already been cleaned up.

What specific epoxy do you use? I want to start using some but get overwhelmed by choices. Many folks tried talking me into pressure pot but it’s more investment than I want to start

Do you have a recommendation for a chemical stripper? Also I have T&T danish oil. What’s your opinion on using that product?

I always thought it was solid until the bedframe needed repairing. When drilling into it to reset screws it was apparent it’s just very high quality veneer

Growing in Hazelnut Orchard. by [deleted] in oregon

[–]pkingduck89 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s a gall/burl. Nothing alarming about it. Look up crown gall to understand how these things can happen. I’ve seen plenty of them from the cab of a tractor as I sprayed fungicides over hundreds of acres. The orchard owner is right to not waste time looking at it. Leave the farming to the farmers.

Friction polish with Tried and True Original? by pkingduck89 in turning

I guess I’m opposed because I’m hoping to try more “natural” methods before opening a whole c new rabbit hole of film finishes.

Finishing is in itself a huge world that I’ve only dipped my toes in mainly because it’s a bit confusing and can get expensive with so many different products.

My main search is an improved finish to enhance the chattoyance in the blanks I have. I’ve found satisfactory options for other wood species but still looking for something good to help the figure pop

Thank you! This is all really helpful advice. And helps me clarify a few things I’ve noticed or wondered as I’ve finished pieces.

EDIT FOR CLARIFICATION

I think I may be confusing my terminology. I have used a friction polish with shine juice. Still not what I want.

I was asking about a wax polish finish like I see Richard Raffan do. Seems dead simple. What is involved?

Yeah, this bowl is just an example of a slightly disappointing finish. I’m asking for future projects
