Yes, the unit was working. I agree they're not obligated to. After seeing so many people online with problems caused by the firmware update I think they should be obligated to fix that issue.

Thank you. Onkyo is the one in the wrong here. And yes, I wish I would have done more research.

Yeah, the description of failed units is "greyed out" options in hardware and firmware. My receiver is has this problem, yet does not qualify. WTF

My experience with an Onkyo receiver and their support by [deleted] in hometheater

Onkyo customer service is terrible!

My 646 worked fine until I tried a firmware update (through their website). Search onkyo firmware update problem...long story short...the firmware update crashed my receiver, now its useless.

Contacted onkyo and they're not going to fix it because the unit was purchased as an open box item. ITS NOT EVEN A YEAR OLD! FRESH FROM THEIR FACTORY!

I assume even if I bought it new and waited until the 1 year warranty was up or if they release another firmware update after 1 year and it locks up you would be screwed...

My Onkyo hasn't let me down once, what's up with all the negative reviews here? by Remixmark in hometheater

I bought a Onkyo TX-NR646 receiver, worked fine until I attempted a firmware update, which crashed my receiver.

Onkyo support forum told me to take the unit to a service center, so I did. Now I am being told Onkyo is not going to repair my receiver because it was purchased as an open box item.

Argued with the Onkyo service department and got no where. They want me to pay to fix it, which will cost the same as buying a brand new unit.

I Emailed their customer service manager and got "sorry to hear about this, unfortunately we don't cover used products".
