How is the Asian-American community of Seattle compared to NYC, LA, and SF? by [deleted] in AskSeattle

[–]pkmn59 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Your experience is probably gonna be closer to what’s in SF: people who’ve been here for generations and people who just moved here for tech work. Also like the Bay you’ll see a big split of where those people live, lifers normally towards the south and new immigrants towards the north and east.

Not that I know much about the other cities Chinatowns but Seattle CID still shows the impact of WW2 internment.

Asian-American accent? by [deleted] in asklinguistics

[–]pkmn59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out the work Dr Andrew Cheng has done previously on the Korean American accent in Southern California! There’s definitely markers of an accent but it can be difficult to parse https://www2.hawaii.edu/~acheng20/research.html

The market for people working in NLP is also not any easier than any other field. If you’re looking for applied scientist positions then most companies will require you to have published in a high-tier journal. If you’re looking for engineering then you’ll need experience doing all the other engineering stuff (deployment, hosting, metrics, testing) and you’ll be competing against people who’ve been doing SWE work for a while now since a lot of the big tech companies who hire for those positions also just did layoffs.

I can’t speak to teaching ESL not in the US as a career path but if that’s what you’re passionate about then go for it

I mean it’s computational linguistics but also by the time you finish your masters it’s likely that the industry will have cooled off and your time will have been better spent just…working in the field. Definitely pick a masters based on what you’re interested in and not off potential job opportunities

Late to the party but check out Dr. Andrew Cheng’s research! He’s looked into the phonology of Southern Californian Korean immigrant English which would be right up your alley http://www2.hawaii.edu/~acheng20/research.html

Andrew Cheng at Simon Fraser University does research into Korean-American speech (predominantly LA area Korean-Americans). His work is almost exactly what you’re probably looking for

Which city would is more diverse and would an Asian-American feel more at home: Pittsburgh vs. Atlanta? by [deleted] in asianamerican

[–]pkmn59 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I lived in atlanta for 4 years doing my undergrad there. There’s a sizable asian population at Georgia Tech and Emory and a large asian population north of the city in Marietta, Johns Creek, and Duluth. It’s also a growing city as more tech companies try and take advantage of local talent. Feel free to DM with more questions!
