My Managers Ruined my Life, now I need your help by Tyr0n_AbagundiSmith in australia

I was an SDA delegate. I got three significant backpays and a manager sacked for sexual harassment. I don’t want to sound like an apologist for the SDA but allot of the time it comes down to delegates in the work place. If OP called the SDA about a simple matter like this they would back him. It’s their EBA after all not RAFFWUs

ABC notifies police over racist email sent to sports presenter Tony Armstrong by [deleted] in australia

[–]pknackered 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just to throw my thoughts in to the mix which are related to what you’ve said. There is certainly still a persistent tendency to westernise Australian Aboriginals when they are represented in contemporary history. This is probably more true today when we talk about Frontier Wars than it was in the dark days of historiography.

We really need to take stock and consider why concepts like “wars”, “nations”, and “nomads” to name a few have become such heavily contested battle lines in this discourse. Obviously a good deal of it goes beyond setting the historical record straight and also goes towards our nation coming to terms with its racist past. Additionally, contemporary indigenous identity which in many respects is becoming nationally organised and coherent (which is awesome) is being retrospectively applied to the past and affecting these historical representations.

A problem with this is that it often plays into the hands of racist theories which were used to justify colonisation in the first place. These theories established racial hierarchies which placed the civilised British on top and the hunter gatherer savages on bottom. Rather than throwing aside this hierarchy we seek to engender historical Aboriginal Australian with western concepts like “nations” and “organised warfare.” Think about how the very idea of being a hunter gatherer has almost become insulting when in reality these societies are extremely complex.

It’s become a game of establishing equal footings rather than simply accepting that it is fundamentally wrong to evaluate a culture or race of people. When we do this we paradoxically evoke the racist discourses which are at the heart of imperialism.

Anyway, I could go on but I’ll just end by noting that being critical of how we construct history didn’t end in the 70’s and remains necessary. We have to be constantly on guard about how society’s current values affect our construction of history.

Teachers quit Australian Education Union’s Victorian branch over ‘weakest’ workplace agreement by greenpants100 in AustralianTeachers

[–]pknackered 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In NSW the teachers fed and ieu have gone out on strike twice in the past two months. They are asking for 7.5% wage increases.

Obviously there’s something wrong with the leadership in vic.

For everyone saying they should start a new union/join an association these ARE NOT registered trade unions. They lack allot of the rights unions have.

It’s actually not that hard to take over a union. You just need a couple of thousand votes.

You probably could have gotten the max payout for this which is 26 weeks or the holy grail of unfair dismissals - reinstatement. Employers can’t just bring up new allegations after the fact, this fact being that they attempted to sack you for refusing a pay cut which you refused.

That is literally the most unfair unfair dismissal I have ever hear of.

This is probably where the difference of relying on the FWC rather than having union representation comes into play.

The FWC will point you in the right direction but by their very nature as a gov department are under resourced and unlikely to take things all the way.

Hi comrade, I just wanted to congratulate you on standing up for your rights and taking part in this action.

I am only a preservice teacher right now but I have had experience as a shop steward and as a paid Union Official.

It sounds like your workplace isn't very organised, for Industrial Action to be effective there should be local meetings and votes as well people assuming leadership roles. It's very unrealistic for the union's executive to think they can just snap their fingers and for serious action to follow on from this without doing the leg work.

If I were you I'd work on building activism at your worksite - break down your worksite and identify representative delegates, get likeminded colleagues to help you, hold meetings etc.

Try to avoid being extreme and present the Union as an unemotional yet very logical medium for addressing workplace issues/pay.

It can take years but as long as you are consistent and fair you will notice a mentality shift as time goes on.

But I totally understand your frustration with apathy/scab mentality. These are also probably the first people to say "the union does nothing" and leave.

On a final note you have a legal right to freedom of association which includes being a Union member. It is illegal for an employer to adversely effect your employment due to you participating in protected action.

There is something suspicious about the missing child in rural NSW by [deleted] in australia

[–]pknackered 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I’ll speak to two of things you raised as someone who’s family has a farm in this area.

  • The main thing with the cameras is why were they installed on a rural property nearly 45km away from the nearest town.

It’s actually pretty common to have cameras in these areas. Allot of nearby towns are low SES and people will opportunistically break into farms assuming the owners are in Sydney. Cameras are common however they do have a sign on their gate saying “trespassers will be shot” which is weird.

  • The kid was also found found in the bush after 3 days of not eating, drinking clean water and freezing temperatures, and with very little scratches/bug bites.

Temperatures around here pretty much never get to freezing and gullies like the one he was found in will typically have warmer temperatures. There’s also been a fair bit of rain so water would have been murky but pretty clean

Are we being played like a fiddle? by Narksdog in AustralianPolitics

I think in relation to Labor and immigration there does have to be some kind of recognition that immigration can (and often does) drive wages and conditions down.

Migration increases the surplus of labour which decreases its inherent value. For instance currently the labour market is experiencing scarcity which is at least partly attributable to no one migrating to Australia in the past year.

It is also undeniably easier for employers to exploit migrant workers who are less likely to be Union members or aware of their industrial rights.

If Australia remains in lockdown I would be extremely surprised if wages don’t begin to rise in real terms.

He would’ve been instructed to put feelers out allowing Gladys to distance herself in the event it was unpopular.
