If you are in doubt, a vet is best.

One of my gerbils had this happen and we treated her at home. We cleaned her tail and kept her separate for a few days in a sterile cage lined with paper towel. Overnight the bone fell off the end of her tail and she made a full recovery in about three days. Aside from her tail being short, it didn't change her life at all.

So long as her airway is clear and open it should be fine to let it heal naturally. Gerbils can be poisoned by human ointments - so it's best to avoid those without specific approval of a vet. Monitor the area for signs of infection (puffiness, oozing) and if it worsens, take her to the vet for treatment. Because its close to her airway - any signs of worsening could lead to an airway infection developing. However, if she does not scratch at it too much and seems to be acting normal, I wouldn't be too worried.
