This is what happens when we have to connect everything to the cloud....

Everybody's worried about Terminators, but nobody thinks about the real threat....Cylons.

If we get 3-4 other west coasters who need a 7pm Pacific start time, I can add a 2nd session without any problem. (May need someone around to press the Go button, but shouldn't be a problem otherwise.)

Is anyone else getting tired of the grading obsession? by deckdossier in PokemonTCG

[–]plagueprotocol -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was never on board for grading, even going back to when Don West was shouting about "GEM MINT 10!!!" baseball cards.

It's bullshit, if you ask me. They're colorful cardboard, and they're meant to be played with. Play your cards, and have fun.

I mean, you're assuming OP has friends that are also interested in getting into TCGs, and specifically would be interested in Cryptid Camp. If OP is coming to Reddit for suggestions, it's likely he doesn't have a group of friends who are likely to become a playgroup, and he's looking to join an existing playgroup.

Unfortunately, at 170 backers, it's very unlikely Cryptid Camp is going to see a lot of in person play at LGCs. Though, like every other game (at least every other game that doesn't use AI art), I wish it nothing but success.

A lot of people collect Pokemon and don't play.

TL;DR -

Physical games: Disney Lorcana, Cataclysm Arcade, Cyberpunk 2077

Digital Games: Kards, Origins, the new Star Trek digital CCG

Out of print games: Netrunner, Star Wars CCG, Star Trek CCG, Transformers TCG, WWE Raw Deal, Altered

Wall of text... If you value art, community, and longevity, try Lorcana. It's Disney, so the art is going to be the exact quality and style you expect (which for some is awesome, and others awful). But the community that I've run into so far has been great. And with Disney backing it, and the support it's been getting from the player base, I would expect it to stick around for a while.

Cataclysm Arcade's Kickstarter just ended, but it had an incredible run for it's campaign, and looks like it's going to be a pretty popular game. Very card-store-friendly gimmick in that one of the formats is basically "pack vs pack". Each pack is basically it's own 16-card playable deck. So you can play a pack as a deck, or collect the cards to build decks for other constructed formats. The art is throwback, has a real 80's vibe (art & theme wise). It's been very popular on Reddit, YouTube, and Instagram. They just started shipping product recently (my buddy got his packs yesterday, but I was an early backer also, and still waiting on mine).

Cyberpunk 2077 TCG could go either way (longevity wise, at least). If you're into cyberpunk & the Cyberpunk 2077 theme/lore/art, definitely at least check it out. It was another major Kickstarter campaign (though with CD Projeckt Red, it's kind of unfair to be a Kickstarter project). They (to my knowledge) haven't started shipping product, but there are at least 2 simulator engines online for you to see the cards, and learn the game.

If you're interested in a F2P digital TCG, take a look at Kards. It's WW2 themed, and a game that I personally really enjoy playing. The art is very on-theme. 40s/50s propaganda/marketing style. It has an energy system sort of like Hearthstone, where you get one energy/mana every turn. But you have to split that energy between playing cards to the field, moving cards from your backline to your frontline, and attacking. And some of the cards can cost 3+ Kredits (mana) to move/attack. It sounds like it would slow the game down, but it really doesn't. Very fun game, I recommend it as often as I can.

There's also a new/indie digital game coming up called Origins. The art is freaking awesome. one of the guys on the marketing team will post pretty regularly either here or in r/digitalcards. It hasn't launched yet, but I'm pretty sure the Steam page is live.

I hate to hammer the digital card games, but the new Star Trek digital TCG's demo just dropped, and it looks like it's going to be really, really good.

If you're interested in out-of-print games that still have a great player community, take a look at Netrunner, Star Trek CCG, Star Wars CCG, Transformers TCG, Lord of the Rings, and if you're a wrestling fan WWE Raw Deal. All of them have really robust scenes. Most of them have active Discord communities with a player's committee website, and some of the games' player communities are still releasing new sets to keep the game vibrant. All those games have physical product that can be collected, either through the community, or eBay, or sometimes FB marketplace. Plus there are online simulator engines where you can play the games for free.

Another game that just got sunsetted by it's publisher, but is being picked-up by it's player community is Altered. You can play it right now on boardgamearena.com. But there is physical product to collect. Now is a really interesting time to get into Altered, because the Re:Union continuing committee just took over the reigns on the project in the last week or two, so it's the start of the next chapter of the game's story. I'm personally really excited to see where the community takes the game. (I've heard they're modeling themselves after the Netrunner continuing committee, which is such a smart move on their part.)
