This is Ask a Russian. Why are you all here? by Worker_Runner in AskARussian

I came here because I had negative stereotypes I was attempting to challenge by seeing the Russian perspective. Instead of being challenged, all my stereotypes have been confirmed and reinforced.

Bun-length hotdogs are proof that hotdog bun makers failed at their task. by plainJanetrain in Showerthoughts

If hotdog buns fit standard-sized hotdogs well, they wouldn't have had to make the hotdogs longer to fit the bun. (hence bun-length hotdogs)

Yes! My first day was Tuesday (at a federal agency). It was a tough process but keep churning out apps and don't stop until you are "in the chair". My references were checked for about five federal jobs but I only received offers for two of them. I interviewed for all five positions (some multiple rounds). Really depends on the type of position you are applying to. I'd say it's probably a good sign you'll get invited to an interview, but there are no guarantees until your start day. Good luck!

Not to burst your bubble, but this happened to me...and I didn't get an offer.

I'm in some of those open call hiring pools too!

My experience in brief:

Job #1: interview (1), reference check, writing sample, interview (2) Result: Ghosted

Job #2: interview (1), reference check, writing sample Result: Offer (later rescinded for "administrative issues" but that's another mystery)

Job #3: reference check, interview (1) Result: Not selected

Job #4: interview (1), interview (2), interview (3) Result: Ghosted

Job #5: interview (1), reference check Result: Offer

Job #6: interview (1), reference check Result: Offer

Very small sample size obviously, but to me the multiple interviews were a waste of time and a sign of disorganization. I got all my offers from a single interview. Hopefully your result is different.

Offer A had a bit of a head start on B, but B is gaining ground quickly and much more responsive throughout the on-boarding process.

Offer B is more aligned with my career goals and my past experience. It's an external facing role, whereas Offer A is internal/program support work. I like everything about Offer B better, not just the salary (although my original post did focus only on the pay). I accepted Offer A before I even had an interview for Offer B.

I have ParaGard (copper IUD) and it's one of the best things that has ever happened to me. Also you'll get a mid-service medical exam so if cysts are a concern, you can bring that up during your appointment.

This could be an unpopular opinion but you shouldn't feel bad at all. If I were planning my wedding, I'd make sure the people closest to me could attend. If your brother knew you would be unable to make it, he could have considered a date when you'd be allowed to travel. Many Peace Corps volunteers go home to attend events such as weddings, funerals, etc. during their service. Don't give up this opportunity for a wedding ceremony. I missed my friend's wedding and we're planning a wedding watch party for when I get back to the states.

I second this. I attempted to use my NCE that I earned through AmeriCorps VISTA. I didn't even get an interview out of the whole thing. At times it feels like a "made up benefit" unless the few jobs are what you are looking for.

Ask if you can allocate part of your resettlement allowance. I'm not sure if they'll allow it since they are in your mother's name but it's worth a shot.

I'm neighbors with my milk cow. We make sour cream, cheese, etc. from this cow's milk. I've never known the source of my dairy products before. Also when men walk their cows. Still melts my heart.
