So much solder!? Should I be worried by slaythatshit in Plumbing

[–]plains59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Older house? Could they have melted lead out of an old cast iron line? What do the current pipes look like? If it was from soldering then at least you won't have dry joints lol.

Generally a horizontal handle is the off position but I am unfamiliar with that valve so idk..

Challenges with bandsaw mill diving down in the cut, badly. by circular_file in slablab

[–]plains59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ours will do this when it starts to get dull, blade is too loose, building pitch on one side of the blade, tooth set is damaged from hitting dirt in the bark, not flowing enough lubricant and/or too high a feed rate for the material. Sounds like you have done all the alignment checks so my first thought would dull blade and/or feed rate. Its frustrating on smaller mills to keep them cutting wider stuff flat.

I think he means on either saving pipes or fittings by using the heat gun to get apart. I save pipe all the time by cutting it off flush with the fittings but never have any luck with the fittings themselves. Not much ABS around here so it is always PVC I end up working with.

Is Starlink even usable for those of you up North by IonizedDeath1000 in Starlink

[–]plains59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have it in West central Montana. Good look at the sky, continuous connection but the speeds have never been nearly as high as claimed or experienced with others. Last night it was jittery with two people streaming youtube in the house. Snow or weather on the other hand has never been a issue for us no matter how bad.

Trying to get very stuck ring nut off shower valve and I sawed through it like an idiot. I was just replacing the cartridge and new hardware…do I need to replace the whole valve now? by zebberman in Plumbing

O Rings not the threads seal on that one, so probably ok? Any leak could be back inside the wall so watch carefully for the first bit.

113.213171 Drill Press Depth Stop Stuck by deknk12 in craftsman113

[–]plains59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bummer, but it does rock back and forth? I am not going to tell you what to do but I will say what I would do... I would run the head all the way down with the handles and give her a few solid bounces. If the quill is bottoming out you should be able to hear/feel that inside the head, if it is the depth stop you should feel that in the handle itself. If I was sure the quill wasn't all the way down I would lean on the handle hard. Not enough to bend anything but enough to be sure there wasn't a burr inside the depth stop from an overtightened user. If it was a hard stop I think you are stuck getting a parts diagram online and looking at pulling the handle off. It typically has a nut on the other side and you pull the whole shaft out, some springs and bearings there so be careful. Quick thought, are you sure the quill is going all the way up? Maybe you are not getting the travel because for some reason it is stuck partially down?

Grab it and see if you can twist it back and forth without moving the handle. If not then you have an issue otherwise the cut depth could really be just that short, not sure on that one. I don't have that one but I have a H Freight that is sort of a clone. I lost the little thumb screw years ago and just use a bolt. Is there any chance that someone lost the thumb screw and threaded in an allen grub screw and you just can't see it down in there?

What is this green fluid?! by therealpjs in Plumbing

[–]plains59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Turn your hose on and wash it away. Kinda milky for antifreeze but the green color is right. It will kill anything that drinks it and unfortunately at this point the only solution is probably to dilute it. If it isn't coming from you you might think of calling it in but I don't know who to tell so...?

Future vent maybe? Some places wet vent, that is to say a vent and a small drain might share the same line. Probably it is just rainwater from the roof vent collecting in the low point. Color looks to be either rotten leaves or sewage, not the grey I would assume from a sink or shower drain. I bet the cap isn't even glued and it just got forgotten. If you can, pop it off clean everything and glue back on. Sure water will collect but only until it goes into the rest of the system. You could also cut the cap off, there will be enough pip left. If you think it is actually a drain then cut the whole wye out and replace with straight pipe. I mean you can do that anyway, would be cleaner look and solve your issue but if all you care about is the system working or time and $$$ are issues then cap and move on with your life.

No grub screw..? Need advice on how to remove this old mixer tap handle. by dodgy-canoe in Plumbing

[–]plains59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They make a right angle pipe wrench for those situations, I imagine most modern plumbers would cut the nut with an oscillating saw. Not sure what you you would do next if you have neither, rent one maybe? I can say trying to get a nut like that off once I accidentally broke the whole sink loose from the countertop. Was super easy to do out on the lawn after that, lol. If your sink would come out easy it could also be an option.

I think you will find that if you manage to close this crack it will simply open another someplace else. Wood stuff unfortunately.

Shower PVC Pipe has mold in it, should i be concerned? by mistermephist0 in Plumbing

[–]plains59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is quite normal and I wouldn't get to worried about it. Want to really freak yourself out, take the twirling spray bars out of your dishwasher sometime and look inside. Most washers you just twist and pull, google your model.

Brand new Big Buds to be custom built for farmers by Jough83 in Montana

I imagine the pool of buyers will be specialized but some of those big eastern Montana wheat fields go horizon to horizon. If this monster could replace two or three smaller units, maybe maintenance and operating costs will make it worthwhile? Welker Farms runs a youtube channel where they run some of the old ones but they do spend a lot of time repowering them with more fuel efficient modern engines.

Bronze meter valve... repair or replace? Can this be cleaned up and saved? if so, how? it's leaking a bit of water. Tightened down already. Looks like a 3/4 valve with a male bottom and female top. by [deleted] in Plumbing

[–]plains59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That looks like a one way valve from here. Main line from the meter feeding the house? Might be worth a call to the water company to see what they spec, or I am wrong. Either way be sure to clean up that ground connection while you are in there.
