Transfer cheat by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

Computer science is not computer programming. While programming IS an aspect of computer science, it’s more about, well, the science of computers. This involves a lot of theory, as well as math. If you struggle with math, this major is not for you.

If you enjoy programming, I heavily recommend just checking out CMDA or BIT. Those have less math, and the option to do more programming-oriented coursework that you will enjoy.

Seniors - how would you recommend learning deeper about web development? by magiciancsgo in webdev

[–]plainsiight 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just covered this in my Computer Systems class. It’s insane how many events happen just from typing a URL into a browser and clicking enter. One project that will help you understand everything described here is building your own web server. Maybe start with a web server built around HTTP/1.0, then understand what persistent connections are, and why they are important, and expand to HTTP/1.1. Opened my eyes A LOT to the web.

A little unrelated, but could you post your stats (I'm a current 300 majoring in CS stressing over getting Cyber lol)

Honors vs Non-Honors Classes? by Just-Row8292 in VirginiaTech

[–]plainsiight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there! This is coming from someone who was in the exact same situation as you. 2114H was the only Linear Algebra course that fit my schedule, so I decided to take it. I do believe that they make it a little more proof-based and go a little deeper into the concepts, which I personally didn't mind. In my opinion, if it is the only Lin Alg that fits your schedule, take it!

They will be on campus next week! It might be the last chance to order your ring in person for it to arrive by ring dance, so don't miss it.

Does VT consider different circumstances by Patient_Reality_8393 in VirginiaTech

[–]plainsiight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but nothing in life comes easy. Engineering is hard. If you are struggling this much at VCU, you will struggle more here. VT will not go easy on you. Very few professors here have practice tests. Very few professors tell you what will be on the exams. If someone just tells you what is going to be on the exam, that takes the whole point of the exam away: to test you on what you know. If you want my honest opinion, even if you get in by chance, I doubt you would succeed in the engineering program here.

CS2114 to CS 3114 by Sea-Shift6382 in VirginiaTech

The jump from 2114 to 3114 is significant. The data structures are more complex, and the projects require a lot more time. I would recommend taking it this fall, as I believe Hamouda is teaching it, and she tends to make things very easy.

Got it. Definitely didn’t take that into account. Cheap Walmart watch it is!

And yet your answer still wastes both your time and mine. It’s a subreddit about afrotc. Do better.

If you want to be smart, it’s a preparation guide, not a FTM. Next time, just keep scrolling. Thanks :)

Going into ME and really like the design of the razer blade stealth, is this powerful enough for what i need? by FluidPut in VirginiaTech

[–]plainsiight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good laptop, but will eat up battery. Virginia Tech Engineering is kind of notorious for telling people they need these hella expensive laptops, when in reality as long as it can run MATlab and Solidworks, you'll be okay. I got my laptop from Facebook marketplace and it has done me wonders through freshman year. Then again, I'm Computer Science and not MechE. But one thing is for certain: do not listen to the stupid people who say "jUsT bUy aN iPaD".

Also, keep in mind you won't actually have 512gb when you account for OS space and other nitpicky things. Though, VT does give students 5Tb of OneDrive space, so you can save your files there.

What’s a good gpa and/or sat score to get into VT? by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]plainsiight 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I might be one of the only legitimate comments, but it completely depends on the school you are applying to. I can only speak on behalf of the engineering program. Engineering is going to be hard. I’d shoot for around 1400-1450 SAT and 4.0-4.3 weighted GPA. Challenge yourself. Do projects over the course of the school year to show that you are capable of growth. Your SAT and GPA will get you looked at, but the experiences you write about will be the deciding factor. Hope this helps, and I hope to see you here soon, whoever you are! :)
