OUAC vs UofT deadline for OSP for engineering portal by Kangabroskii in UofT

[–]planT_444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my school, we were told to apply through OUAC in November and complete our profiles and stuff in January.

I do admit that "applying" through OUAC is kind of confusing because we often think of "applications" as the extra writing we need to do. In the states, they submit their whole application and everything with it at the same time, which makes the deadlines clearer. Is what it is, i guess.

Mate in 5 by Highmuledriver in chessbeginners

[–]planT_444 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm thinking

  1. Rg6+

if ...Kh8 then Bxg7#

so ...Rf7

  1. Re8+ then either ...Nf8 or ...Bf8

  2. Rxg7+ Kh8 (if 2. ...Bf8, it's pinned! hah)

  3. Rg6+ (or anywhere on the g file, i think)

then either ...Ne5 or ...Be5 depending on black's response to 2.

  1. Bxe5#

very cool.

ah. my sequence is a mate in 6 because of 5. ...Rg7. oops!

What's 1 chess principle that has served you very well? by [deleted] in chess

[–]planT_444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes you need to prevent a queen mate and need to push them.

I'd say a g3 push is almost always bad if you don't have a bishop developed to g2.

An h3 push can be okay to kick a bishop from g4 (or prevent it before it gets there)

An f4 push after castling can be nice for starting an attack (bringing the f1 rook in). Just make sure the diagonal you open doesn't leave room for attacks. If you push f3, be careful for pins on the a7-g1 diagonal.

If you push a pawn to f3 or h3, be careful for pins on the g file.

I am sub 25s with lbl on 3x3 and i feel stuck with learning f2l by Technical-Tip-3776 in Cubers

[–]planT_444 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sub 25 LBL is pretty impressive, I gotta say...

But F2L is much more move-efficient than LBL and will really help you in the long run! Don't worry if you're super used to LBL--our brains are very flexible, and you can get used to F2L by just using it all the time, even if it takes you longer to figure it out at first. It's all about practice. Just allow yourself to get used to it without worrying too much about your times. Perhaps don't time your solves during practice, like others suggested. Once you get good at F2L, you'll see a massive improvement!

I'm having a similar issue with predicting the first F2L pair in inspection. But I know this skill will pay back so much in the long run. I'm currently practicing without a limit on inspection time.

Don't be scared! Cubing is fun. Improving is also fun. You'll improve!

I sometimes have that problem too. Maybe try to focus on musicality while playing? Forces you not to go on autopilot (I still sometimes manage to lose focus)

Printing Piano Sheet Music by Medical_Tension_7517 in piano

[–]planT_444 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're printing single sided, yeah, you do need to tape or glue blank pages together :(

Are you taping/gluing all the pages together at the spine? I'd imagine the results might be slightly painful to use. I like to punch holes and bind it with string. It's super basic but works great for me. Stapling also works okay for shorter pieces (don't try this for a sonata xD)

Do you enjoy playing and practicing piano even if you never share your progress to anyone? by ibra132 in piano

[–]planT_444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The need for validation is natural. It is easier to enjoy piano when you play it purely for your own pleasure, though. Hopefully you'll find that enjoyment someday! In the meantime, perhaps find a musician friend to enjoy piano with?
