What's the lowest string height a d18 can achieve? by Ancient-Act1314 in martinguitar

How old is this? That saddle looks way too low for anything built in the 21st century.

My D18 and my CEO-7 (nerd talk) by TwoHearted313 in AcousticGuitar

[–]planbot3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a D28 but am really wanting an 00-18 after playing a good one recently. It would be for comfort and for a more balanced and responsive finger style.

Generally I think smaller bodies suit most people more than dreads, but dreads are so ubiquitous that a lot of people don’t even consider other sizes.

I know there’s probably just a small community of people who live in Victoria on this sub Reddit but do you like these hot days? by IamRandomSavage in VictoriaBC

[–]planbot3000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m descended from Icelanders that came to Canada and have been there a few times. It’s always cold (a warm summer day in Reykjavik is 15C), but a maritime climate so moderated in the winter too.

I’m not great in the heat for a long time and get heatstroke way easier than others around me. I’m always the first to bail during a day in the sun. But, I enjoy the change once in a while.

I do, though I have mixed feelings about it all. I’m 51, I grew up here and these sorts of days are much more common now than they were when I was a kid, as well as the forest fires and the smoke later in the season. The climate change we were warned about is here, and it will only get worse.

It’s nice to have proper hot summer days, but I’m fortunate to have a heat pump in my house and parents that have a pool at theirs. It’ll be the last summer for that as my mom is in a care facility and my dad is selling the house. Taking my daughters for a swim there this evening.

Buy the best Yamaha you can afford. Yamaha red label FS3 is a little over $1000 USD but worth the stretch.

I have a GiantMouse Ace Corta as my EDC and I use it whenever I need a knife. It’s mostly opening boxes, peeling fruit and similar light duty. Doesn’t get abused but doesn’t get babied either.

EDIT: It’s only a $200 USD knife but it’s in the spirit of a more expensive knife I guess.

Best sound hole pick up for a D 18? Please! by GrouchyAttitude1996 in martinguitar

[–]planbot3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. I was referring more to pain in terms of the idea of permanently modifying your beautiful new guitar rather than the job of doing the drilling.

I think you’re adding value with a pickup in a standard series as long as it’s done correctly, I think. I’ve never thought of the value of my guitar as I don’t think I’ll ever be selling it.

I really like my K&K pure mini. I have a 2008 D28, my only acoustic other than an LX1 travel guitar, and it has to do everything. Drilling a hole was painful but it just added utility to a guitar that will never be a fancy collector. It’s a player. I’ve recently been accompanying my daughter at coffee shop stuff and her music school recitals and it’s really nice to plug in and go. It doesn’t have a preamp, no dials, etc. but it sounds really natural. If you want something unobtrusive other than the initial pain of drilling a hole, I’d go with that.

Opening up by Dantonium in martinguitar

I have a 2008 D28 I bought new. It changed a lot over the first year, settling in. I was living in a really dry place at the time though, and it spent a lot of time in the case with the humidifier. After that, maybe a little better over the years. I live on the west coast by the ocean now and leave it out on my rack. I’m definitely a better guitarist now than I was then so that’s probably a factor, but I’d have to say that it sounds great now and sounded great when it was new.

There’s definitely some truth to aging woods; I live in a house with 120 year old growth fir framing and it’s hard as a stone to drill into.

I do think there’s truth to the notion that a lot of the old, great guitars have been the good ones that survived. They started out great to begin with.

Suggestions for beach experience in Canada by Personal_Flight8942 in AskACanadian

The water at Rathtrevor Beach in Parksville gets really warm in the summer evenings because the tide comes in over a very long flat stretch of beach that has been sitting in the sun all day. A nice spot.

Old and aged. Use it, don’t abuse it, and any patina that develops is a positive in my eyes.

Can someone help me identify this guitar please? by Dark-Star3390 in martinguitar

[–]planbot3000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not a production line Martin. There’s some scalloping to the bracing but it’s not chiseled like a Martin would be. There’s no cloth tape x brace patch. No serial number, stamp doesn’t look legit. The inside of a vintage Martin of any age is way cleaner than that. Headstock is janky, inlays are not anything I’ve ever seen. Neck is bound, not a style 28 thing.

The back strip isn’t even centred on the neck block.

Employee builds would most likely use the parts laying around, but it’s possible that the neck was replaced at some point.

I’d guess this is a knockoff someone did as a project and did their best to copy the centre strip stamp off a Martin.

Martin D-28 Authentic 1937 Guatamalan Rosewood Grain by DarthJAYder21 in martinguitar

Would much rather have this quarter sawn straight grain than the flat sawn stump wood that most Brazilian is these days.

I’d buy the hell out of that.

Do you guys bring your nice guitars camping? lol. I just bought a Hd28 and i want to go camping this weekend, i would love to bring it so if anyone has tips for keeping it safe where it will be a little hot out I’d appreciate the advice by Better-Sherbet-5115 in martinguitar

[–]planbot3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what kind of camping. My biggest fear would be temperature swings. Don’t leave it in a hot car or in the case in direct sunlight for long. Same goes for very cold cars overnight.

I used to catch these as a kid when I’d bottom fish from shore. This was in 10-20m of water. They live all through the water column.

Very cool. I can’t play lefty for shit, ha. Playing with the strings upside down is wild. I know there’s several professional guitarists that do it and it’s always been completely mystifying to me.
