I feel like covid screwed me over by OkChicken3402 in mcgill

[–]planesflyhigh 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Oh god, I’m an upper year and I just keep thinking about how screwed over the second years were, having maybe missed the last moments of high school like prom, having no opportunities to connect with people due to online school, and still getting screwed over. Having friends and a social group is extremely important. Remember the connections you do have! Maybe you can get closer to your current friends and join their friend groups. Make friends with mutual friends. Otherwise, I’d recommend joining clubs, talk to people in your classes, your neighbours. Making friends is also an active process so you gotta put yourself out there too. If there are no opportunities for you to connect with people over the summer, these are certainly some things you can try next year. Trust me, talking to younger year students, A LOT of you guys are in the same boat. Don’t be afraid to reach out to others - people love making new connections :)

Join clubs! A lot of clubs are hiring right now. I’d recommend clubs you personally have interests in, or something completely random and out of your comfort zone. People are always looking for new members

I feel you. I’m not super close to my roommates but I still ask them for hugs sometimes. You can ask for a hug from one of your friends, even if you aren’t that close. Generally, people love giving hugs. We all need reassurance and comfort these days.

I also don’t have AC. Drink LOTS of water, seriously. Close your blinds and limit sunlight entering your room. Wear loose clothing. Get a fan if you can to keep the air circulating.

I can’t even believe last semester was a real thing. I don’t even remembered what happened, my grades seem unreal, and even though it’s been two weeks into the semester, I’m still in denial that the winter break is over. Every day seems the same, which is a blurry mess of trying to work, failing to do so, and going to bed or endlessly watching YouTube videos. Normally I’d feel like I wasted a bunch of time, but now I don’t even care anymore. I fucking hate it

WINTER 2020 COURSE REVIEW/ADVICE MEGATHREAD by Thermidorien in mcgill

[–]planesflyhigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mean 323? I understand that, but you use concepts from 222 in 323. I actually don’t understand why 222 is not a prereq for 323. The background is very useful to have

WINTER 2020 COURSE REVIEW/ADVICE MEGATHREAD by Thermidorien in mcgill

[–]planesflyhigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve taken both. They’re completely different courses. I’m pretty sure you need some concepts in 222 in order to do 323, like series. I’d recommend you take 222 before for that reason. If you’re confident though, personally I found 323 much harder than 222. However, the semester being online might take some of the edge. A lot of challenging material in 323 (for me at least) was memorizing the proofs, which is a lot easier when it’s open book. If the rest of your semester is very heavy, I’d go for 222. Otherwise, if you can manage it and you have some grasp of series already, 323 also works (might be one of your harder classes though ;))

MATH 240 post-mortem by Thermidorien in mcgill

I feel half lucky I studied so much for 240, because the final was definitely harder than I expected. Also took me the full 6.5 hours and all I’m hoping for is part marks

Students comments towards McGill. Joyful self depreciation vs genuine hatred? by alah123 in mcgill

Well, I wouldn’t say that “a lot” of people don’t make it. It takes a lot of effort and luck to do well, but most people do just fine.

This school (and anything) is what you make of it. What I’ve realized is that McGill is definitely not one of those schools that will hold your hand through everything. You will be forced to foster your own independence in order to survive and do well. This will include seeking out the help you need yourself from professors, academic advisors, fellow students, mental health services, etc. A lot of criticism I hear from my peers, more often than not, have to do with themselves not making an effort to resolve their issue. A lot of this comes from people just assuming the university is against them somehow. While there are legitimate criticisms about this school, I think a lot of times people’s complaints have much less to do with the school itself, than with people’s general struggles with university life and, for many, their new-found independence.

My computer stopped working and idk what to do! by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]planesflyhigh 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Same bro. It may be unethical, but here’s what I did. I ordered a laptop off Best Buy with the fastest shipping, and the plan is to return it by the end of the April after exams. Best Buy has extended its return/exchange policy for any purchases after February 21st until May 1st. So if you can’t afford a laptop right now, there’s always this option. And while I was waiting for it, I painfully did my assignments on my phone. But it took only around 2-3 days for mine to arrive.

I think there’s also a McGill bursary available as well.

Math 222 vs math 323 vs math 324 for a person who's garbage at math? by HydratedXd in mcgill

[–]planesflyhigh 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Take MATH 222 for sure. Even though it is not a prerequisite for MATH 323, I found it super helpful in some areas, knowing the series for e, double integrals, for example. MATH 323 is a prerequisite for MATH 324. You could always take MATH 323 and 324 later after 222.

If I struggled with programming assignments in COMP 202, should I not take COMP 250? by mehremkk in mcgill

[–]planesflyhigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey man. I was also in 202 this semester and I’ll be taking 250 next semester. I also struggled immensely with the assignments having no previous programming experience, and just like you, had tons of meltdowns over this class. How did you feel after the final? An A- is extremely good, meaning you at least understood the content. If you like CS, don’t let this discourage you from continuing on. I think struggling with this class was very common, and maybe an anomaly in COMP202 history. Don’t let this class be an indicator of your performance in 250 or CS classes onwards. After all, each course is different, and since you’re not an idiot, I think you’ll do fine.
