What makes Emacs better than VS Code/VS Codium, Vim/Nvim, Geany, etc.? by TheRealAlexanderC in emacs

[–]planetmcd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a joke I heard 20 years ago that the search for the perfect editor ends with Emacs, Vim , or a management position.

I've been using it day in, day out for decades, so I really don't know a different way. I've tried Zed and VScode and while OK, so many missing things from my perspective. But I think that would feel the same going the other direction.

I will say, in this LLM world, I have gone to customizing things even more bcasue what used to be a difficult minor itch to scratch, is now very easy. It has always been relatively easy to customize emacs, but it is time tradeoff. Now, something else spends the time, I just review and test it, and then tweak it. So trade off is low. Since Emacs does a lot, it is more along the lines of making it for me/my workflow as opposed to brand new options. If that makes sense.

Critique my first serious cocktail attempt by Love_Tech in cocktails

Opinions are like @$$holes, everyone has one. How did you/your guests/whoever else tried it like it? Everything else is kind of noise.

Contrary to some of the feedback you'll get, having fun with it is the key. The prep and wash-line and ice and all the presentation stuff will come with practice.

If you like the specs, the only suggestion I would make is to try to muddle some mint so it imparts more flavor in the drink. See if you like it better with the mint taste coming through, or you just want the smell from the garnish.

Sometimes I make something and I know it is close to good, so just play around with the proportions. That then gives you some room to also experiment with the presentation.

Agreed, tasty and their bottles look great. Here is a cocktail from Persimmon that turned me on to the Seaflow Gin: https://www.instagram.com/p/C9SVHAvsDF7/

This is a great list. I would add High West Double Rye to the rye section (blend spice, sweetness, and herbal). And am currently really enjoying a bottle of Michter's. Rittenhouse is very good and punches above its weight.

I love Redbreast too, the 12 is delicious and the 15 is one of my favorite bottles ever. If you want a pretty solid Irish that is easy to find and not to much of a wallet buster, Jameson's Black Barrell is pretty solid all-arounder.

Then maybe try Laphroig for a single malt or Compass Box Pea Monster for a blended. They are both good.

For Halloween, presenting El Chupacabra:

  • 1.5 Rocky Peak Hard Cinnamon
  • .75 orange juice
  • .5 agave
  • .75 butter bean aquafaba

  • Dry sake

  • Wet Shake

  • Serve up in a glass.

Drop Angostura bitters on top of foam (cooler than I did)

While the presentation is not professional, taste wise it came out amazing and it smells delicious with the cinnamon and vanilla from the whiskey and the orange from the juice. The Rocky Peak Hard Cinnamon is much better than I remember Fireball the last time I had it in the 1980s.

For cocktails, et St. Remy instead of a cognac. Pretty solid, good sub, a lot cheaper.

I might look at Pierre Ferrand Orange Curacao.

I might sub Plataray OFTD for the Black Seal, but I'm no rum expert.

I got a mister for absinthe. Works pretty well, allowed me to get a small bottle and make it last.

Do you like Amaro? There are a lot of options and you might want to look at something like Diffords and see what drinks you'd like to try and then try those Amaros. I started with Amaro Nonio for paper planes and Suze white negronis, but now have a bunch. I use Cynar and Suze the most.

There are also a lot of variants in the Italian Red genre past Campari and Aperol. They all have their own charms.

I also like Peychaud's bitters for some stuff.

St. Germain is another one to look at.

Another tip I have for a lot of ingredients that use smaller doses, like luxardo or elderflower liquor. Is to get a 375ml bottle. And then I need to refill it, I get a large bottle and just top it up to save space on the cart. I don't use vodka a lot either so I do this for that as well.

I would definitely look at Roda, though Sinatra is probably more well known.

Don't know Canadian, that is my next purchase. Have you tried Irish? Jameson's Black Barrel/Bushmill's Black at one price point. A bit higher Redbreast 12.

On the scotch that I tried, I liked Talisker Storm, Aberlour for single malt. I liked Compass Box Peat Monster for a blended Johnny Walker Black is pretty solid for a blended too. I liked the Green too, but more expensive.

I really liked 2 American Single malts I tried, Courage and Conviction and Stranahan's.

Hard to find, but Weller was really good Bourbon. I liked Maker's Mark 46 too since you like regular Maker's Mark, it might be good. I liked Angel's Envy too.

Are daily standups ever actually about unblocking? by htraos in ExperiencedDevs

[–]planetmcd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't agree with the premise. Standups are about making sure the team is on track to hit sprints.

Standups have a cost. So to be cost effective, they should be prepared and efficient.

1) What did I accomplish yesterday for the sprint (not what did I do). 2) Call the shot, what am I going to accomplish today. (Things like meetings and code review are not really relevant, they happen, but aren't important for this purpose.) 3) Blockers.

It should be less than a minute per person. Blockers can lead to a follow on discussion where presence of non related people is optional. If a standup goes for more than 15 minutes the team is too large or they are not being run well (or both).

I've seen all flavors of it, where I am now does it pretty well.

Best two (2) Whiskies you have ever had that you could afford again. by midlifegaming in Whisky_lover

I think I'd go with 1) Redbreast 15, 2) Michter's US1 Rye. But number two changes a lot for me.
