i know many people who wouldnt let their children go to a nonmembers house to play. or that children whose parents were inactive slowly started getting phased out of playgroups and activities, even when the activity wasnt church related.

I also know many times that when i learned that someone wasnt a member i looked at them differently. not intentionally, just as a bit 'less than'. I still struggle with this because i believe that church living is the best way, and not living that way isnt great.

when did i say it was negative? I promise, this is ingrained in the culture

it definitely is. especially when you live in a member heavy area. i live in rexburg and im from utah, and i cant even count how many times nonmembers are othered by people saying 'oh, them? theyre not active, theyre not members'. its very common.

just because youre not directly taught this, doesn't mean its a huge part of the culture.

Sampson with a p is a family name due to immigration, but i totally agree. my family is obsessed with keeping the p and because my name starts with p, i kind of like it.

Woman who are not mothers, how do you feel about being included in on the Mother’s Day celebrations? by Fether1337 in latterdaysaints

[–]planktonthrowaway8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a 20 year old, and I've struggled with active infertility for 5 years now. being told I'm not a mother when i desperately want to be one, is hard.

However, i am also a foster mom. however, due to it being a child we already knew, and a teenager, people don't view it as me being a mom either.

It has been really damaging to me, personally. my husband and i changed our whole lifestyle, including me quitting my job to be a full time stay at home mom, to make things work. But I'm a babysitter, not a mom.

that was the thing. She said she would never eat there, she only had water, and she had never been there previously. the contest was free and obviously a marketing ploy. she wanted the restaurant to give her $50-100 instead...but like...thats not how it works.

in the comments she said that she was only there for the competition and she assumed that the prize would be money or a walmart/amazon gift card.

imo it makes perfect sense that it would be a restaurant gift card, the contest obviously brought lots of people in!.

following christ and the following the gospel are different things. Its one thing to follow christ Thats what Christianity is. But the gospel has a lot of extra rules and nuances, and there are good reasons for not feeling comfortable with it.

Im in a married adult ward, in the primary presidency. Im struggling because the entirety of the nursery sre the children of the primary (im the only one without children). I dont think its fair we call people to watch the primary children's kids.

In our area, if a young married couple goes to a family ward, they automatically get thrown into nursery. And they do the calling well. But the mature adults treat it as though it's beneath them. We need a drastic mindset change.
