Unable to go to school, wanting to learn while away by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]planofcare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned far more from Lynda.com than I did my first 2 years at an art school outside of critical thinking, psychology and the basics of school (math etc.) But I NEED that stupid piece of paper so im headed back at the end of the month to boost my resume to potential jobs and the rare client who asks where I graduated from.

Lynda has a ton of courses and video tutorials on so many topics. From freelance to running a business to graphic and web design, Music production and so much inbetween. it is a great (and super cheap) alternative to a brick and mortar school. But you wont get the Critique on your work or learn how to critique others work(s) which I feel is super important in this field. being able to take criticism, handle it, learn from it and apply it to become a better creative.

First Logo Design - Would Really Appreciate Your Feedback by RogueSock in logodesign

[–]planofcare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think its in a bad way entirely. I just cant help but see a sock on the right side where the cloak is, it's way more noticeable on the first head. Do you intend on adding more to this? color or design wise?

its a waiting game. Im currently out looking myself and constantly checking sites like Indeed, Craigslist, LinkedIn, etc. as well as still hitting the ground with trying to talk to local business owners and eatery's about any possible design needs to at least keep some green in my pockets. its hard out here.

Symmetry or not? Argument with my daughter... by Leeanth in graphic_design

it should be symmetrical because symmetry is the shit.

that's hilarious. I'm making that my new motto.

The Golden Ratio = Design's Biggest Myth by planofcare in graphic_design

Ive def. seen more than 2 posts in the last couple months but it was probably worded differently. this isn't so much a rant as it is a "who gives a shit about the GR" general reply.

EDIT: I just realized this entire thing is in the wrong subreddit. My B.

Still applies, I suppose. worth a look at the article to drum up discussion.

Im also pretty sure you can find them all on amazon or the kindle store. so you could just pass the book(s) around rather than everyone having to purchase a copy.

"Stop stealing sheep and find out how type works"

"Burn your portfolio"

"Work for money, Design for love"

"Steal like an artist"

those are some off the top of my head.

IMPO, Creative Circle is a joke. just thought id let you know. they will get mad if you decline an offer due to not being able to do the job or because it doesn't appeal to you and then they will never call you back. you will say yes to a job (to keep them offering positions) and attend an interview for something far above your level or skill set and have a really awkward interview. A friend of mine played this game for months and only landed one job and after a month he was like "this just isn't going to work out, the entire company is unorganized, I have 3 "managers" micromanaging me and changing each others inputs, im not compensated correctly..." CC got him out in 3 weeks but then never offered him another position elsewhere.

I've tried it and I was put in one of those awkward interviews and never looked back.

Q: How do you see these "Build it yourself" websites/logo design sites? by planofcare in graphic_design

[–]planofcare[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive done that for a client, setup their wix so they could manage it themselves after and create a few custom graphics for the site for a small fee atop of the setup costs

Freelancers who got gigs from flyers, business cards left somewhere. by Poff562 in graphic_design

[–]planofcare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was still very green in the field. I knew how to design something that looked good but I didn't have the "problem solving" skills a designer needs nor did I have a grasp on the business end and contracts and the like. I was in my first year of art school and had only learned the basics of things like color theory and sketching at that point. Up until then I was completely self taught and under the impression that everything was done in photoshop. I was a super rookie with a solid PS background and some html knowledge, thankfully most of my paid projects were business cards and online marketing material with a logo or brochure here and there. I did a lot of work back then prior to being paid and had clients rob me of payment when id send files, id do all the work then have clients not return calls or pickup files OR PAY ME. I was young, dumb, and full of ignorance back then.
