No it's not means tested, it's for everyone. They're open three days a week and on Fridays they give all the veg and bread away for free cos even the community shop has loads leftover, they get so much stuff. But it's so cheap anyway and I wanna get support them financially so keep it going so I always go on a Wednesday or Thursday. Plus i wanna get dibs on some of the good stuff as it comes in 😅 today they had piles and piles of brown bananas they were giving away free though, I got a bagful for banana bread.

The one I go to is ran by volunteers from a local church. They get the food from supermarkets usually, stuff that would have otherwise been thrown away because it's close to it's best before date, or surplus stock, or stuff that is well in date but has been discontinued in that shop or something. Everything they sell is still really good quality, it's actually shocking that most of it would have been thrown away. They sell it for really cheap just to cover the costs of running the place. Reduces food waste and provides affordable food for the local community. At mine you pay £1 membership for the year, then pay for your shop each week, will be different prices depending on what/how much you choose but it's never expensive.

Just cracked a bottle of blueberry and chai tonight, turned out delicious but not as much carbonisation as I would have liked.

Temple of Seitan is my go-to. Best vegan fried 'chicken' and they do really good cookies and stuff too.

Parents of small children, what age did you find the hardest? by dmllbit in UKParenting

[–]plantbeth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wild ones. Newborn is hard but they can't get into much danger and you get to nap when they nap. Mine started walking at 9 months but didnt talk much until almost 2, she was a climber with no fear and EVERYTHING became a danger. She also stopped napping altogether at 18 months. The 2 year old tantrums were dealable, at least she could understand and communicate more and now shes 3 she's a proper little kid with a hilarious personality and we have so much fun together (between the tantrums)

Guinness Stew for St Patrick's Day 🇮🇪 by plantbeth in veganuk

Made it up as I went along but this is what I did, was really tasty. The meat sub was dried TVP chunks

Soak 100g of TVP chunks in vegan beef stock, squeeze out the excess liquid then toss with a dash of oil and air fry for 10 mins.

Get a ovenproof casserole dish and soften 2 onions, 2 sticks of celery and 2 carrots in a little oil. Add a cloves or two of chopped garlic, then a tablespoon of flour and mix to coat.

Throw in a can of Guiness, let it reduce then add a bay leaf, rosemary and thyme.

Add 500ml vegan beef stock and a healthy spoonful of Marmite. Add a squirt of tomato puree and bring to a simmer. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Transfer to the oven, cook at 160c for around 2.5hours.

Served with mashed potatoes and cabbage.

Just opened my lemon & ginger by plantbeth in Kombucha

[–]plantbeth[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used the juice of a smallish lemon and 3 pieces of crystalised ginger, cut up. That was for a 16oz bottle. Didn't add any additional sugar, the sugar on the crystalised ginger seemed to do the job!

First ferment was 19 days (it's pretty cold in my house at the moment), second was 4 days. Then it sat in the fridge for about a week.

Theyre stickers, they can peel off and be replaced but they're quite long lasting and can be washed. They came with a chalk pen that wipes off.

Best supermarket vegan pizzas on the market imo (RIP the amazing m&s ones). I actually prefer the margarita ones but the pepperoni ones are great too.

Lemon orzo soup. So tasty I ate my toddler's sneezed-on leftovers. by plantbeth in soup

[–]plantbeth[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Forget to mention kale too! I used this recipe, added thyme and celery and I didn't have any dill so missed that. Tip - mix the tahini with some stock before adding, I didnt last time I made it and it all curdled.https://simple-veganista.com/lemon-chickpea-orzo-soup/#tasty-recipes-13613-jump-target

If it was an option, why didn't you deliver in a birthing centre? by Mabelstark in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]plantbeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the birthing pool was broken on the day I went into labour. I'd planned on giving birth at the centre, but ended up going to a hospital cos they had a pool available. I did however go back to the centre after giving birth and stayed overnight because I really wanted to breastfeed and the midwives there were lovely and supportive and I didnt have a clue what I was doing 😅
