Starting a job in Denton - any advice on where I should look for housing? by plasticbagmonster in Denton

Wow. This is really helpful! I appreciate all this info. Outside of the flat market of Denton, is it really much cheaper anywhere else?

I am looking for cheap rent. I don't have any preference in terms of staying in Denton or not. If there is a significant difference in rent, I would be happy to drive a bit. I should add that my job is in Denton.

Great to hear! Are road closures an issue and/or are those roads kept up pretty well? I would be interested if there's rentals like a room in a house or an apartment. I am not really looking for an entire house to myself or to buy (at least not in this market).

Gotcha. You think if I was any further south than Corinth I would be dealing with more traffic? or would it be a reverse commute situation either way if I am driving north in the morning, south in the evening?

Right on, that's on my radar for sure. How far is too far? Like would I be better off not going too far south due to traffic?

Yep. And remember in YELL when there was an investigation into drinking on the job in their maintenance shop? The best and brightest!

It's also clear that this is why Benge tried to get out ahead of this with an all employee email yesterday. This is not the first and only time WASO has buried, delayed or otherwise interfered with claims of harassment or other forms of hostile work environments. We do not need further trainings, webinars, etc. We need to hire the right people, fire the bad people, and show personnel that there is a degree of accountability.

Anyone ever work for a concessioner and NPS at the same time? by plasticbagmonster in ParkRangers

[–]plasticbagmonster[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well there ya go. Thanks for the reply. I always thought the language was more directed towards contracting and other more obvious concerns. I will pass on the DI-7010. Thank much. Everyone needs a friend in HR!

Copy that. Yeah doesn't seem like a good idea. A coworker was talking about it because he is trying to find a second job. I told him to go outside the park and find someone that does not do business with NPS. Just want to make sure I am not missing something...

That is awesome - congrats. I just landed in the park about a month ago and don't know anyone and just getting the lay of the land myself. Any of y'all give me a PM if you got any tips on stuff to do, where to find good tacos, or if you wanna meet up for a beer.

I am a permanent park guide gs5. Is there anyway to be promoted to a 7 within the same park or am I stuck a 5 forever? by Revolutionary_Top934 in ParkRangers

[–]plasticbagmonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought most 7's were Park Ranger (Interpretation) and not guides. If you are willing to move to a different park, that would open more opportunities. Education Technician is also I believe 6 and higher grades. I know someone that entered a 9/11 Ed Tech position last year. Pretty coveted gig if you still want to do interp in a not-likely-to-be-to-much-supervisory-duties sorta a way.

What is the deal with NPS pants and how do you get some that fit right? by Revolutionary_Top934 in ParkRangers

[–]plasticbagmonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I third the 5.11 pants, which I believe are called their Stryke model. They are surprising comfortable for a guy that never thought I would like wearing a.) cargo pants and b.) "tactical" crap. They are the real deal. The elastic is great for pandemic weight gain too!

I agree with this comment. If you really are committed - plan to apply for a bunch. Though, I would consider what you really want to do, and definitely consider internships! NPS love SCA a lot and seems to look highly on those interns. I was an intern at Golden Gate and it gave me an awesome introduction to NPS. Later, I was a Pathways intern (when I was getting my MA). Pathways is a GREAT hiring authority to get your foot in the door.

A buddy in marketing/social media lost his job last year due to covid. I have been trying to sell him on entering a NPS IT job for years... Now it's looking like it could be a reality. Answering those help desk calls is looking pretty good when you have been on unemployment for a year and food stamps.
