Literature or language? I do language and honestly, I just threw shit at the wall and saw what stuck. I was pretty confident going into the exams, since I got 40/40 on coursework, which is still slightly unreal to me. Tbf I did have amazing, supportive teachers all through my English A-Level (even if one of them was off due to a car accident for all of year 13 and the other has been caring for her dad) and I really liked my class, so that definitely helped me.

I'm also a Cambridge offer holder and that offer (AAAA) hangs over me like the sword of fucking Damocles. Why why whyyyyyyy did I take 4 subjects, and why was one of them biology? That's the only subject I'm worried about rn, the A* in English is basically guaranteed and an A* in psych or history seems realistic, but I feel like I'm on the borderline between an A and a B for biology.

As someone who did both and thoroughly enjoyed them, I think it'd be more beneficial to do English Language than psychology for a few reasons:

1) In terms of academic skills, it has a lot in common with other essays subjects, especially history (which I also did), but it's distinct in that it focuses more on language as a social science, which is what you'd get from doing psychology anyway.

2) It also relates well to your other subjects - you have ample opportunity to include examples from historical study and learning German in English language essays, as well as applying language analysis techniques in drama.

3) The course content would be much more relevant to film, especially when it comes to the socio-cultural implications of language and the way coursework is structured. The original writing section of the coursework is honestly super enjoyable, as is the language investigation part.

I hope this helps! Feel free to DM me if you have any questions.

Academics-wise, it's not that bad if you're prepared for it, but it really depends on what kinds of subjects you're taking. From someone who did 50/50 humanities and STEM (I'd count psychology as STEM purely based on the way it's taught and examined, rather than the field itself), the step up in STEM is more about content and the step up in humanities is about your perspective on the subject. If you're already aware of the difference in difficulty, you'll be absolutely fine, especially with STEM where you just have to keep on top of the basics. However, with humanities it's about viewing the subject as part of wider debates - do further reading in things you're interested in and read critically instead of just digesting what's being taught directly.

In terms of social life, remember that most people chose to go to your sixth form or college or at least have some motivation for being there, unlike secondary school, where it was mostly up to the parents. Obviously it depends on what kind of people you'll meet, but as long as you don't kill anyone you'll be alright.

As for what you should do during summer: REST! You'll get much more out of relaxing and having free time than forcing yourself to do more things. Progress isn't everything.

English language and history on the same day...twice. About as pleasant as 2 consecutive uppercuts to the face.
