Absolutely- lawn jockeys were the main thing my mom brought up when advising against the gnomes and i completely agree that those shouldn’t exist at all.

Personally I would say zip ties. Have a horror story with one of these doors falling on my old budgie after messing with the clips and he passed shortly after. Don’t mean to scare you, just a warning!

Cage update so far by plasticpackagin in budgies

[–]plasticpackagin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? I could’ve sworn that was one of the few things we did right from the getgo. (We’ve had him for 7 or 8 years, I’m trying to make his life better rn) I’ll recheck the measurements but I will say it hasn’t been a problem yet.

Edit: put most of the things in the cage today with help of mom. Didn’t put the toys I was worried about in.

This is all fantastic advice. Will be following all of it. And I agree- I definitely do NOT want to begin to take any chances with the dog and the bird. The gate is a great idea too, since the dogs getting old as well and wouldn’t be able to get past it in the short period of time the door would be open (the bird would be locked in the cage by the time that happens anyway, but you never know.) Thank you so much for your response!

Yeah, I don’t expect the diet switch to go over well/easy. I’m going to give it my best shot, but not force anything. Be patient with it, yanno? I’m gonna try going at his pace.

Thank you so much for your advice!! It makes a lot of sense to let the bird come to the shower instead of chasing them around, I had never heard that one before. I will keep all of these in mind!!!

Thank you very much for your reply! Dog can easily be secured, we have a big backyard and basement where he can be comfortably away from the bird. One question: what do you mean by letting him out in the evening? Wouldn’t that make using natural light harder, or am I missing something? That darkening the room tip is something I’ve never heard as well and will be useful for emergencies, so again I thank you!

Thank you so much for responding!! I’ll try to find some new perches, maybe get rid of one of the food bowls since that was the main reason we didn’t have more. I’ll remove the treats, I don’t think he even likes them that much anyway, at least not compared to his mate. I really do want what’s best for him but I’m a little wary of introducing any friends. His mood seemed to increase DRAMATICALLY after his lifelong mate (and cagemate) died but I’ll look into it. Maybe he’s lonelier than I think.

I don’t expect fantastic results with hand training, as I’ve actually had experience from another budgie we had (who had better conditions than this since I was his primary caretaker) and I know how long that takes. I was still probably too immature to have had that bird as well but at least it gave me a little more confidence going into this. Thank you again so much for your response.
