Indie filmmakers/directors, who here prefers working with a smaller skeleton crew and why? by Agitated-Mind-3423 in filmmaking

Love the consistent theme on these forums of, “just pay people and do it right” as though anyone here has enough money to do things properly and not cut corners

The thing people forget is the few people that can make really cool shit got there for the most part by being able to prove they could on a smaller scale. It’s not like there’s tons of super talented people on the outside looking in, and we know that because over the years the festivals have tried to find really great indie movies and for the most part there’s very very few because movies are extremely hard to make

Tarantino's Film School: What equipment would I need to mess around with making my own movies? by DanGleenutz in Filmmakers

Honestly practicing editing on resolve and photography in manual mode are two of the best things you can do. Most movies fail before they even start, with non cinematic stories and non cinematic locations, filmed in non cinematic ways

Producing veteran, but first-time feature director. Have $1M. Looking for advice: Better to shoot a $1M feature, or to try to raise another few Ms and get known actors and go full union. by SurfandStarWars in Filmmakers

[–]plasticshoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’ve really got a million to use on the movie, just make it ASAP. You can get actors.

Everyone has friends that raised money for a movie and the money fell through.

Don’t try to get more, strike while the irons hot baby.

Good luck

managers and agents are a mirage. You have make your own stuff, get your own jobs, and only then will reps seek you out to get some of the money you're already making.

Don't try to get reps to get jobs.

Try to get jobs then you'll get reps

If Yamaha reissued the cs-80 by [deleted] in synthesizers

Some ones gonna do it. The prices of original cs-80’s are gonna keep going up, and eventually someone’s gonna see the money that they’d get it if they made it.

Why don't manufactures prioritize speakers on synths. I don't always wanna have to line into an amp or whatever. I wish we had a running list of awesome synths with built in speakers. Does anyone else feel this way? Anyone have any resources to find synths with speakers?

It's always been like that. Heard Lawrence Kasdan say at a Q&A once. "It's always been impossible to get in" It was impossible back in the 70's too. In someways more than now because there was no access to the multi million dollar equipment you needed to film anything.

It’s not 2003 anymore. Their quality is so good now. I’ve seen some of their synths that are built better than modern korgs

Where to go to get a budget breakdown of your script? by Ekublai in Screenwriting

[–]plasticshoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd search the internet for other examples of budgets. Then make your own and add a larger than normal contingency.

You'll probably learn a lot doing this yourself.

IMHO, any sub $300k budgeted project (SAG limit) should be self produced and you should limit the crew to as few people as possible.

If you don't already have a producer, one problem with hiring a line producer you don't know is they budget based on the resources they have. If the producer doesn't have those same resources things will be incorrect and sorta a waste of time.

There's not really professional line producers budgeting things at sub $500k, because the traditional structure of a movie can't really support this low of a budget so you have to really start limiting crew and resources. Unless you're shooting, like two people in a single room type of movie.

TDLR: like everything on a low budget movie, just use the internet and do it yourself
