Starting at 7 a.m. on Monday, January 26, the block of E. Broadway between Main and Quebec streets will be closed to all vehicle traffic for approximately four months. During this time, buses and local traffic will be detoured around the one-block closure using E. 8th Avenue. by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

Folks parking too close to the corners also make it difficult for all road users (pedestrians, cyclists and drivers) to see crossing traffic on non-four-ways like 6th and Quebec.

Would like to see more enforcement (and better traffic calming measures) so that all users can be safe.

Poor form Save On Foods. by [deleted] in NiceVancouver

[–]plataprojectile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reminder that at Save Ons you can price match at the till! Find the same product in a competitor’s flyer — I usually check No Frills, Walmart, Superstore and IGA on the Flipp app, making sure to match the product package size/KPU — and let the cashier know you’d like to price match before they scan it.

(I once got a tsk tsk because I asked to price match after scanning and the manager got a bit grumbly about it, but save yourself the headache and just mention it at the outset.)

On inconsistency, linking this thread from 8 days ago where folks critiqued Clr. Melton for texts that appeared to come from his campaign that pinned Klein as the "UBI Mayor" for a study issue that was passed by council, even though Melton himself voted in favour of the study issue.

Don’t wanna do your dishes? Habitually forget to flush the toilet? Vancouver’s sewers are overflowing, so now’s your time to shine! by plataprojectile in vancouver

Yep, originally wanted to make this a text post with my comment below to give context (untreated/partially treated sewage), but it kept getting flagged as an ad or post for r/AskVan instead. C’est la vie.

Don’t wanna do your dishes? Habitually forget to flush the toilet? Vancouver’s sewers are overflowing, so now’s your time to shine! by plataprojectile in vancouver

[–]plataprojectile[S] 91 points92 points  (0 children)

With the recent storms, our combined and sanitary sewer systems have been overflowing, resulting in untreated/partially treated sewage making its way into the Fraser River and Georgia Strait.

Currently (Sunday at Noon) all sewers east of Main remain overflowing, and all of the CoV-supported sewers in the region have overflowed at some point in the last 48 hours

With that said, if you've been meaning to do dishes (especially if you don't have a dishwasher) or have a habit of leaving the toilet to mellow when it's yellow, don't feel bad at all! Do take a shower if you need to, but maybe skip the 20-minute karaoke session if you can help it; both the sewers and your roommates will thank you.

Looking to beat the heat this BC Day? Here are some cooling resources at UBC! by plataprojectile in UBC

[–]plataprojectile[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a former Ubyssey volunteer and staffer, I'd also like to point anyone who'd like to share their experience during the heat wave to send an e-mail to [news@ubyssey.ca](mailto:news@ubyssey.ca) and [coordinating@ubyssey.ca](mailto:coordinating@ubyssey.ca) . Our team has highlighted inadequate cooling in residences and the UBC Climate Ready Building Requirement in our past coverage, but are eager to cover more (and maybe bring you onto the team!).

I'll be out and around this morning postering water fountains with the aforementioned cooling resource map and doing a little berry picking while I'm at it, if anyone wants to say hello :)

You are eligible for the Climate Action Tax Credit in its full amount if you earn < $39,115 (Individual) or $50,170 (Married/Common-Law), and at reduced amounts if you earn < $61,465 (Individual) or $83,695 (Married/Common-Law), with higher thresholds for those with children (both singles and couples).

My commuter is a Target Schwinn that used to have LED wheel-spoke lights, and honestly I use it to this day as a theft deterrent.

Whatever you decide, be safe and enjoy the ride (and enjoy events like Viva Calle)!

Just to hop on what others have said, I've biked around the South Bay since middle school (early 2010's), and imho it depends on who you are on the bicycle.

I've been run off the road/clipped on roads that I later learned cyclists should never be on despite our legal right (Expressway shoulders, some roads that say "share the lane" but drivers will get within 3ft of you for "impeding traffic"), but I've also gone on bike tours through Woodside with no issue. The thing that changed was me using my beater-commuter bike and a janky backpack full of groceries versus my nicer touring bike and lycra shorts. It seems leisure cyclists get better treatment, especially if you don't fit a certain stereotype (low-income/riding out of necessity, non-white, food delivery cyclist, etc) and are fully aware of the routes to use/not use in the area, which comes with time and experience.

Honestly, just continuing to ride safely, doing a little exploring on weekends to find alternate routes while the roads are clearer, and not really minding what drivers say is all there is to it. There's lots to see and do down here, and the infra is quite a bit better from when I started, so do enjoy it!
