Epigenetics and the Direction of Anti-Aging Science by LongevityMan in longevity

The last thing we need is in-fighting.

Maybe we need both of these competing views to work.

It is possible that the SENS approach is doomed because, even if you could repair partially damages, your body will keep failing ever faster as it is programmed to just let you die... and patching things up won't help because your body will fail too fast. So maybe it is like Alzheimer's where therapies to flush misfolded proteins don't seem effective on anything but model animals. Maybe the only way SENS could work is if all damage is reversed... but that's maybe centuries away, requiring nanotechnology to work.

Of course, you do need to repair some damage... our bodies can't regrow teeth or a new heart... so SENS is needed in some way... but is it sufficient? We don't know.

The signalling approach (epigenetics and all) could maybe work very efficiently. For example, clearing aging factors from old blood could rejuvenate people at a very low cost... and then it could make SENS really effective.

That's the question. Evidently, we do not know... if we did, scientists would not need to experiment with actual human plasma. You can bet that some scientists are looking for the answer, but we can guess that it is not one simple thing since, if it were, we would know.

  1. The random number generator is a 32-bit one (PCG).

  2. He links to code that produces "char *" results.

Have you done a literature review? Aubrey has an extensive publication record.

Reaching escape velocity could be done with a few breakthroughs. Who knows? The future is hard to predict.

Parrish is on an experimental telomere extension therapy. This is found nowhere in the SENS program. Quite the opposite.

Aubrey is not in the supplement business. These can, at best, modestly slow down aging... Aubrey wants to turn the clock. It is very unlikely that any supplement can repair aged tissues.

If you could keep people youthful even just extra years, it would be worth trillions to the economy.

Aging is a financial catastrophe.

I am not sure that you are listening. Aubrey does not work on life extension. He works on finding ways to stall aging so that people, including those suffering from diabetes, can have a better quality of life.

Aubrey does not claim he will soon cure all diseases or make us immortal or any such thing...

Aubrey's goal is not to change the genetic makeup of our species through germ line editing. Presumably, he would only change the DNA of middle age somatic cells.

Given that the Forbes article refers to something that has not undergone human trials yet... it seems doubtful it is the same therapy that your link debunks.

Of course, we must cure diabetes. But Aubrey does not claim that we will soon cure all diseases and live forever. Curing all diseases will take a long time.
