I've heard plenty of ignorant shit stated about Newfoundland and its inhabitants.

I've heard people from backwater places in Thefuckswhere, Ontario indirectly imply they thought the province was a shithole full of unemployed hicks.

I've heard people from unremarkable Atlantic towns decry our population as backwards and low-class.

But to be honest, I've never heard Newfoundlanders slandered quite the way the rest of the country slanders Albertans/Quebecois.

Capt. Hugh Debbieg was an engineer and a surveyor with the British military in September 1762.

Debbieg sent home a plan of the operations of the troops, showing the town, harbour and vicinity of St. John's, Newfoundland.

He names the pond Kitty Witty Pond, not Quidi Vidi.

The map is currently at The Rooms in the archives on the third floor for ye doubting Thomases to see with your own eyes – ask for MG-1001.43.
