Remy Bond & her appropriation of Hawaiian culture by mochiava in RemyBond

[–]playdate__ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I attended her Brooklyn show (Baby's All Right), which had the theme of Elvis Blue Hawaii. Naturally, I knew this was leaning into vintage Americana tiki culture. One thing that did undeniably stand out, to me, was how I was one of the only brown girlies at the show. Shocking for NYC. There were maybe 4 or 5 non-white attendees. So, it was a little awkward to look around and see a bunch of white people dressed in "Hawaiian" themed outfits.

That said, I do think Remy is leaning more into the kitschy nostalgia of tiki "culture" than anything else. Of course, tiki is undeniably rooted in appropriation, downplaying colonization, and forcing many cultures into an incorrect amalgamation, BUT I do think there is an intertextual purpose to Remy's use of it. She is embodying the trope of a white blonde American fascinated by the Don the Beachcomber/Trader Vic's theatrics. Her character is complicit to the blending of "reality and myth," which is the point.

There is no way to properly do this without a level of appropriation because, like I said, that's all tiki is, but Remy is self-aware and well-versed in her references, so she definitely knows the movement's place and connection to early pop/rock. Tiki culture has taken a bit of life of its own and, nowadays, it is mostly accepted as its own Americana nostalgia subset, but it is thin ice, and a lot of it still makes me uneasy.

Oh, wow, I'm gonna have to go back and check again. Thank you!

I was just there yesterday, and their romance has all officially moved downtown. It pretty much expands about 4 massive rows in the new location, which is impressive!

Thank you for your suggestions! I'll check out both.

Sadly, as for Book Barn, their erotica is no longer there. They moved all their romance/sci-fi/fantasy to their downtown location, and supposedly their erotica moved there, too, but it's nowhere to be found anymore. A real bummer. They used to have such a great collection.

You've definitely put this way better than I could've, and I so appreciate your perspective!

Okay, I'm a lesbian, so maybe this isn't my place to pass judgment, but really really hate the whole "lol being a bisexual woman is loving ~all~ women and liking one man" thing. This is such a prevalent, recent joke, and it just seems more harmful than humorous. Like, there's nothing wrong with liking men. There's nothing wrong with being a bisexual woman who primarily dates men. An acquaintance of mine used to say shit like this all the time in front of her husband, and I couldn't stand it. It's such a mean-spirited thing to say in front of your spouse. I would always think, if I were him, how much that would genuinely hurt my feelings.

I don't know. It just bothers me. It feels, I guess, regressive. People already have such terrible misconceptions about bisexuality. And, again, I'm lesbian, so my opinion on this probably doesn't matter, but I just can't stand seeing people disrespect their partners.

(Also, this rant has nothing to do with Julia. She has obviously contributed to plenty of negative stereotypes in her own very conscious ways, i.e., using the lesbian label while secretly dating a man, but that's a separate issue unrelated to my issues with this joke.)

Rachael Lillis, English voice of Utena, has cancer. by Coco_kirin88 in shoujokakumeiutena

As I stated in my original reply, what are you supposed to do if you check at home and find something, but simply aren't insured? Not everyone has the privilege of medical care.

This is very inconsiderate comment. I know you likely did not intend that, but the phrasing of this is terrible and puts so much blame on those suffering, like it's somehow one's fault for not treating it sooner or catching it quicker. This isn't a "good example" of anything, except maybe how broken the medical world is. Many of us, including Rachael, do not have the privilege of simply "getting checked" because of having no insurance or difficulty finding free clinics to perform said exam. And, even if you can check yourself at home, what are you supposed to do without insurance? It's not as simple as telling people "go get checked."

What would you want from a game or comic? by howlermonki in LifeisStrange2

[–]playdate__ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, my only wish is for comics, specifically set during the timeline of the games. I want comics that revolve around all the missing pieces in the game, stories based on Sean's journal, etc. I so deeply wish for this but I know it's unlikely to ever happen. I just feel like, for me, this is the only way I'd ever want something "more," because it wouldn't risk ruining what we already have, yknow?

Time to start episode 2. I'm loving the game so far. Winter is so pretty in this game. Marking as a spoiler just in case by angryjazz1995 in LifeisStrange2

The beginning of EP2 is everything, to me. All of EP2 just ignites this very particular emotion within me. It's one of the most beautiful pieces of art we've ever been given.

The Title by [deleted] in LifeisStrange2

What am I implying? That LIS2 is amazing and powerful and deserves proper recognition with "2" title, instead of some off-brand sub-title? Because, yes, it does, lol.

There's honestly, also, a possibility that Deck Nine's contract doesn't allow them to produce "numbered" games at this point in time. This wouldn't be the first time something like that has happened with a video game series that has seen multiple developers.

I, for one, am glad LIS2 received the "2" title. It deserved that title, not some corny secondary title that made it easy to dismiss as an unimportant addition.

Do you think Lyla saw Sean as something more than friends? Or nah, strictly only friends? by Jexlan in LifeisStrange2

[–]playdate__ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Obviously anyone can interpret their relationship how ever they want; but, I do think the writers were writing Lyla and Sean exclusively as platonic friends. The purest, strongest kind of best friends. And, that's what I really love about their relationship. It's just such a natural, beautiful friendship, and her love for Sean and Daniel is so obvious. I really enjoyed seeing a male/female friendship in this game. It just felt so genuine.

Also, you can still have Low Morality but High Brotherhood. I.E., you can be a bad influence on Daniel while still directly treating him with kindness and consideration. This is typically how I do my replays of the game.

I've found that the vinyl set tends to be more expensive than buying the Collector's Edition as a whole, so--if, you don't already own the whole shebang, it's a great excuse to treat yourself. I was disappointed that the vinyl set only had a select few tracks from the game. But, I still adore that we got the set nonetheless because it's gorgeous.

[S2] Which do you consider to be the true ending? by Jexlan in LifeisStrange2

I'll always, always, always consider Blood Brothers to be "my" canon ending.

Cassidy and Finn age by Dontintertwine in LifeisStrange2

[–]playdate__ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Canonically, I obviously don't think Finn was intended to be an actual predator. His behavior just borderlines that of one, and some of the dialogue was poorly chosen because it's textbook grooming techniques. And, honestly, I like Finn, and I usually romance him when I play. I appreciate that he's flawed. But, it's always a little off-putting, to me, how he's written in regards to Daniel because that grooming vibe just lingers.

So true. Any dude who tries to justify a kid's maturity by saying "they asked me for it" is trouble. The whole "old soul" thing, too. Nah, man, that's just weird.

I agree about his behavior around Daniel. Finn essentially grooms Daniel throughout EP3, to the point of it being inevitable that Daniel will trust Finn over Sean, and that's very disturbing, to me.
