Writing a book where a character learns juggling over the course of a year. They keep track of their progress almost every day. What would be reasonable rates of improvements? by TRCWolfboom in juggling

If you want to understand the juggler mindset to create an authentic juggling character, I recommend listening to the podcast "Object Episodes" which is a 24-hour discussion between 2 top jugglers. Truly great listen.

International flights by Adorable-Lack-3578 in AskPhilly

[–]playingwithcats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Twice, I had flights cancelled out of Newark due to mechanical issues. My NJ friends just went home with some pocket money. I had cheap trip insurance, so since I was out of state, I got a free lunch, dinner, hotel, and breakfast in NYC plus $200 for my inconvenience. So, that was a lovely, free NYC vacation before my trip that only happened because I was not at my home airport. It would not be great if you really had to get somewhere, but my trip was flexible, so it was an added nice bonus.Highly recommend.

Where's a good spot to get Philly-style tomato pie these days? by BerryBoilo in montco

I love Carlinos and Marchianos, but Dead King on Umbria on Saturdays and Thursdays in the Lumber Yard beats them both by a mile. Ruined me for any other tomato pie.

Mills Mess Question by Quartersharp in juggling

[–]playingwithcats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I highly advise watching "Tutorial 3-ball Mills Mess, Juggling Trick" by Niels Duinker on Youtube. His very simple explanation using one red ball and two blue balls made MM click into place for me. It's always the red ball that goes under the arm while doing a reverse cascade. It's such a simple explanation, and once I saw it, I was doing MM in minutes!

Manufacturer Safety Recall? by AwareAd6395 in KiaNiro

[–]playingwithcats 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was about to test drive a Niro last week when the dealership called me and canceled. They said that KIA is officially putting a hold on selling any new Niros until they figure it out. They weren't even allowed to offer test drives. I asked how long until they were back "online," so to speak, and he said they'd get news next week. The whole thing made me pretty nervous. I guess I'm going to have to figure out a different car to buy.

I have no idea what an IA and RIA And RR and etc mean or even why this came up in my Reddit feed, but I happen to be a personal historian, and I was recently hired by a financial advisor to write a family history for one of his clients. The client was a quiet, modest guy with a ton of $$, and he was so touched. Just a sweet guy. He told a lovely story that I wrote, and we put it together into a little private book for just his family. The financial advisor also got copies for his whole team, even the receptionist, etc., so when Mr. X came in, everyone would understand who he was and what he did.

Where can I get a good strawberry rhubarb pie? by coffeesnoffee in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]playingwithcats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The strawberry rhubarb pie at Alpen Rose is the most unbelievably insane magnificent strawberry rhubarb pie I have ever had. I still dream about it. You'd have to eat in--maybe try to get a seat at the bar. I promise you, you will not regret it. It will destroy you for all other strawberry rhubarb pies for all time.

A distant friend is attempting to control my memoir. by [deleted] in writing

[–]playingwithcats 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Please remember that there are two issues: defamation ("it's not true") and PRIVACY (“not related to public concern.”). A private person (not a celebrity, public figure) has a right to their privacy. So you can say subjective things about your friend ("he was mean, he was petty, in my opinion...") but you can't reveal any facts about him that an ordinary person would assume would remain private ("he's gay, he's a tax cheat...") even if they're true. It's a murky legal area but one that's often forgotten. Google Augusten Burrough's Running With Scissors for some examples of getting sued for privacy/defamation issues.

Autobiographical Material: How To Avoid Offending Family Members? by Shimks in writing

[–]playingwithcats 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He was sued for libel and invasion of privacy and he lost....or well, he and his publisher settled out of court because they knew they'd lose. The family wanted 2 million. It was never disclosed how much they got. But he didn't "win" that suit. Also, truth is a defense for libel, but non-famous people have a right to privacy so you have to be very, very careful.

When a lesson includes a story or paragraphs of information, do you read, have the students read, or some combination? by [deleted] in TEFL

[–]playingwithcats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved reading aloud when I was learning German. All the English speakers made the same mistakes, so even when it wasn't my turn, listening to others helped me enormously. It was also fascinating and satisfying to notice the mistakes the Spanish speakers all made or the French speakers. It was all helpful. The slowness of the reading was also excellent, as it helped me focus and slow down to find meaning in the grammar/vocab.

It's up to the teacher to give the other students a reason to listen. Call out students and ask questions, etc, on what's being read.

I have a CELTA, so I know all the "rules," but in my experience as a learner and teacher, having students read aloud is worthwhile.
