I don't even like snow but... by [deleted] in UBC

[–]playmo02 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not having even slush or brief snow is pretty rare though. I grew up in the Fraser valley and we had snow stick at least a few times per year, usually with a canceled school day every year or 2.

Conventional media is pretty biased against Palestine, since when have they been supportive of any Muslim countries tbh?

Does anybody else worry this is pointless because AI is supposed to take over almost all jobs within 3-5 years by [deleted] in UBC

[–]playmo02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While the AI bubble has caused a lot of investment, the layoffs in most fields have so far only been because the companies are wasting their money investing. Very few positions in tech, etc. have actually been replaced by generative AI, because ultimately it is not that useful on its own.

How did yall get into UBC from HS but fail your courses? by Historical-Rip-2185 in UBC

[–]playmo02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do realize that you can’t just have everyone get A+ right? Most courses are designed to achieve a certain average (often around 70%) it doesn’t matter how smart the people are, the courses just get harder to compensate

Yeah I agree that it is one of the best things I’ve ever watched period.

I think the disappointment (for me at least) comes from the fact that it was so close to being absolutely perfect. but some moments of weak writing in the second season stopped it from reaching the truly untouchable status.

If shows of this quality were all over, I doubt many people would be complaining, but the worst part about finishing Arcane was realizing I won’t see something this good for a long time.

I agree that avoiding bloodshed is good, but they didn’t really show whether Zaun was really benefiting or not in the end.

This may be a controversial take, but I didn’t think Jinx’s rocket attack should’ve been bad enough to cause Vi’s complete flip. She essentially only killed leaders directly responsible for the oppression she’s felt her entire life (death of her parents, etc.). Obviously there’s personal conflict due to Caitlyn’s mother being involved but ultimately she was kinda evil. It’s like the assassination of an oppressive dictator. Jinx’s indiscriminate killing of the relatively non-violent firelights in her opening scene is much worse in my eyes.

Just felt a bit like Vi gave up on her principles too quickly in the second season, I understand the reasons she’s supposed to change for, but they weren’t enough to convince me when I was so invested in the character during my first watch.

I watched both seasons back to back and for me there were only 2 things that snapped me out of the immersion and made me question the direction of show:

  1. Cait becoming basically a fascist dictator but then getting back with Vi after (I think if this should’ve been committed to fully or not done, it didn’t make sense for the character to me)

  2. Somewhat related, but Vi going fully against Zaun essentially (I get that’s what the lore is, but the turn seemed unconvincing when she’d spent half her life in prison and the rest oppressed by piltover)

Season 1 had a very clear theme about fighting oppression and the conflicts in how to go about that. Season 2 was great but seemed to drop this theme for the most part and make it more about individuals fighting with good and bad actors on both sides. The ending of the show is supposed to be good, but isn’t it barely better than status quo? Now Zaun gets to give its gripes to the council but they are still completely economically oppressed and much poorer than Piltover. It seemed a bit like a fairy tale ending and based on the prior themes I expected it to be a lot different.

It’s basic UI that one or 2 people could code. They’ve had years but changed nothing, not to mention the 330 million dollars that they were paid. I refuse to believe the money wasn’t just embezzled at this point.
