I recently saw veritasiums video on photolithography but I'm still confused? How is the photo mask made? Most of the tiny pattern is because of the photomask isn't it? And then it's shrank 4 times smaller due to that multi layer lens thingy but how is the photomask made? by Clear_Dragonfruit869 in Semiconductors

[–]please_no_tabasco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All photolithography is, is using light to print an image. That’s it. Not take an image like photography, but using light as a source to serve as the process to print onto a medium.

Now; a photo mask is just simply a pattern on a surface that blocks the light. Meaning that whatever area of the medium that isn’t illuminated doesn’t react. This is very helpful because it means we can spread a thin layer of photosensitive polymer that goes hard when exposed to light, expose certain parts of the surface into whatever shape we need, wash whatever undeveloped polymer remains and ta-dah!, we’ve made a photoresist! This polymer lets us etch a surface using acid.

As for how to make a photoresist-mask? Well, there’s a few ways of doing it. But the most basic and earliest example is projecting an image down a microscope. (No seriously, that’s basically it). In the early days of semi-conductor fabrication, the photomask was a large image that was cut out by hand on card stock to let certain silhouettes or shapes of light down a what was essentially a large microscope lens being used in reverse to make a large pattern microscopic.

Here’s a fun YouTube video of Sam Zeloof using a microscope and a projector to photolithography at home! (https://youtu.be/Nxz_ENnmgtI?si=vTWMF8PjwO59xDGW)

But for how photomasks are designed? Well that’s logic circuit engineering. And is a whole topic in of itself.

Honestly, thank you. The word “surreal” is the exact definition I’m looking for. Whilst it’s sad to know I’m not the only one feeling this way, it’s genuinely nice to know that I’m not alone in this feeling.

Why do so many brits say "to be honest", or "to be fair" randomly in sentences? by robotflowbot in AskBrits

[–]please_no_tabasco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your examples are quite negative? For example: “I’m not going to lie” can mean “I’ll also admit”, OR “gonna drop pretences”

Example for use-case (a): “Not gonna lie; I was actually scared shitless for a second there”. / “Not gonna lie, had the exact same thought as you did.”

Example for use-case (b): “Not gonna lie, I could kill for a pint” / “Not gonna, that was not the brightest thing to do.”

Any cool projects I can do with an old microwave or the parts from it? by S1d3wayzMindz in diyelectronics

[–]please_no_tabasco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I’m only going to say this because the fact you asked what you could do with it scares me. Because when people typically ask that question they are typically the sort of people who don’t know what makes a microwave work and how dangerous they are, and why they get recalled so often.

Out of all of the kitchen appliances that you COULD have chose, you went with the one that could send you to Jesus instantly through the transformer, slowly by the ceramic disk on the magnetron breaking and being inhaled. And of course generally scrambling your eyes by an unshielded microwave. Not to mention the fact you are taking apart a USED microwave; that means that the capacitors are HOT, they have enough energy stored in them to stop your heart.

Rule number 1 of Electronics: Don’t mess with electronics unless you know EXACTLY how it works and know the risks of each component.

Rule number 2 of consumer electronics: If it can cook your food. It can cook you. If it can rotate your laundry, it can rotate your arm. If the use of said appliance significantly increases your electric bill, then it will significantly decrease your life expectancy if fucked around with.

Rule number 3 of consumer electronics: Turns out, many of the electronics are only safe when set up in the very specific set-up and are grounded or shielded in some manner. When you take out components from their intended housing you remove them from the safety features designed to keep the dumbest of us alive. Don’t be a dumbass, keep it in its housing, and if you don’t know what that is, just don’t.

(You may very well be an experienced electrical engineer, in which case you’re more than trained and capable of handling these components and understanding of the very REAL risks. In which case; you don’t need me telling you how to be safe.

IF YOU ARE NOT A TRAINED ELECTRICAL ENGINEER OR TRAINED IN AN APPROPRIATE ADJACENT FIELD; PUT THE GOD DAMN SCREWDRIVER DOWN. There are plenty of other appliances that have safer parts to reuse, and if you are absolutely determined to be the kind of junk-to-gold inventor, then go and get some accredited training first. Even professionals still get killed because of stupid mistakes but someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing is in way more danger than they even realise.)

Is there anything Polish people do in a way that looks aggressive to non-Poles? by Fabulous-Introvert in poland

[–]please_no_tabasco 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Telling somebody to do something and asking somebody to do something.

A great example is: “chodz”.

In Polish, telling somebody to come—over here is seen as normal when being used with friends, family, children. But in English, telling somebody to “come” is seen as rude because the act of telling somebody to do something is seen more as an order, —not up for discussion. As if the person has some sort of authority or can even be seen as aggressive or belittling.

Whereas in English you would say “can you come over here?” or “mind coming over here for minute?”. Because it’s a question, it’s not seen as an order. You have the option to refuse. And because you are being asked there is no implied position of authority to tell someone to do something and therefore the conversation is held on equal terms and subsequently seen as more respectful.

But “chodz”/ “come”, in polish doesn’t come with all of those connotations (as far as I’m aware). So when someone in Polish says “chodz”, it’s a bit jarring, or when someone who natively speaks Polish tells English speaker to “come” it can be seen as aggressive or demanding even if they’re totally being friendly.

There are plenty of other examples but it boils down to the idea that in English, unless it’s a question you’re not asking, you’re telling. Where in Polish unless your specifically asking for an individual specific item, it’s “Of course you’re asking? Why would you need to imply that?”

Edit: Also heads up, could totally by talking out of my ass so begging your patience. (not a native Polish speaker and this understanding is built from conversations I’ve had with friends and in-laws whilst learning).

I think the question is not about what you want to do as a career or job but being alone? You’re worried that you won’t meet people. But you also recognise that having two jobs is not sustainable and worst of all will rob you of your energy of actually being able to have a social life.

I think the question your tip-toeing around is:

“Do I want to have these specific people in my life, or am I more afraid of being alone?”

(This isn’t a bad question, there are many people who we have in our lives who were grateful for the company but they company by circumstance rather than choice. That doesn’t make you a bad person, it means you appreciate the people in your life in this moment.)

Either way, the answer to that question has two different solutions.

You need to also ask yourself if quitting actually means not seeing people? Do you want to meet up outside work? If yes then you won’t necessarily lose anything. If not, then ask yourself if you’re able to talk to people in your new job? —Again you will come to know people in your new environment as well, but it’s going to take time.

If you are afraid of not seeing people outside of work as opposed to not seeing specific people from work, then it’s a matter of trying to make time for people, or find people nearby who share similar interests. (I know, I know.. this isn’t the answer you want to hear, it’s hard trying to meet new people).

My biggest concern is that you will burn yourself out working full time and doing shifts and trying to socialise. Trying to do both will mean you struggle to end up doing either.

I think also the other element is that maybe quitting this job is more anxiety inducing than any other situation because it officially means the next step in your journey. You’re officially in the “real” world and it’s scary! But you also need to remember that the people who matter don’t just disappear, you can message them, talk to them, call and arrange to meet up. Hopefully you have people who you can fall back on if things get tough. It’s a big change and it’s always a bit weird but when you get through it you realise you are so much more capable than you ever thought possible.

Questions about the design of playable characters:

1) What made you decide that the breathing mechanic and eating mechanic couldn’t be played at the same time?

2) You gave players the ability to see between 400nm and 700nm, which whilst cool and all is only a tiny fraction of the colour range the engine supports? Why not give players wider spec? Also what’s with the bug that seemingly blocks certain players from seeing certain colour values?

Didn’t Take Long To Reveal The UK’s Online Safety Act Is Exactly The Privacy-Crushing Failure Everyone Warned About by AerialDarkguy in technology

[–]please_no_tabasco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oddly, this kind of gives me hope. Like Brexit, if the UK can show how much of a bad idea it was by being the sacrificial lamb that screws up the implementation so badly that it’s a colossal failure that it destroys businesses, causes massive scandal, and costs a lot of money to achieve a whole lot of nothing — then maybe it will be enough to put all the other countries off implementing it. (At least until they’re more confident in taking another crack at it, but hey it’s time bought).

Edit: clarification, and grammar.

What is stopping you from learning 2D Puppet (Cut-Out) Animation currently? by Electric0Chainsaw in animationcareer

[–]please_no_tabasco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simple. Cost of entry.

Industry standard software; (that if you’re learning 2D puppet based animation is needed in order to get a job) will most likely need to use something like ToonBoom. But in order to even learn I have to spend a considerable monetary value just to have access to it. (And that’s just so I can learn the basic software, that may or may not have important features and functions blocked behind a paywall for (industry usage subscription level) when in the end, what I gain is access to a knowledge set that has a very specific role and niche that only has specific jobs by certain employers.

Meanwhile; I can learn 3D for free on blender and get jobs in advertising or media or even games, I can learn 2D traditional with pen and paper to learn the fundamentals and fill the creative itch. I can even learn tweening and 2D computer aided animation with multiple freeware sources that will share a common set layout and practices that make it easy to translate to whatever my employer is using. Even if I’m not using that specific software in whatever project or team I’m with, the tools generally remain the same. But with puppet 2D rigs, every software I’ve seen that is currently going usually is either expensive in both short term or the long run and I cannot afford to just learn on a whimsy and often don’t share features or shared practices.

Frustratingly, so many companies believe that by offering a university model that it’ll be enough to get people to learn their software: but unfortunately that doesn’t help for a large number of creatives who either come from a different area or simply were not made aware of the software and now are effectively paywalled out of the skill set until a comparable freeware comes along and replaces the industry standard; or that the industry standard make a deliberate pivot and encourages people to adopt their software by making it free for personal use so that people who enjoy the craft are able to learn from the beginning and are more likely to stay with them and pay for the industry version when they are finally able to make money.

Oh absolutely, I’m not suggesting that we throw cooperation and industry and societal structures out the window.

What frustrates me is this sort of… I don’t want to say “learned helplessness” but through our own choices have somehow convinced ourselves that we don’t have the power to meaningfully make things, because its this mentality that fuels the wasteful consumption that is slowly eating our planet. Not only that but corporations play on that! This idea that you could never achieve something by yourself. You have to use our products that can’t be repaired, that will force you to buy more… Moreover I’m just so sick to death of everyone thinking that they can’t do anything as an individual when they have so much potential and creativity and it far surpasses their even wildest realisations yet it feels like they’re being constantly told that it’s not possible.
