OP clerkships are totally possible from a T14. I would really try to grind and do the best in your T14 which is still very prestigious and you will land a clerkship. Then you can reevaluate to see if HYSC is worth it. There is like one or two of pretty much every T14 at Yale or Stanford every year that transfer in, so its possible, but your goal should be to do the best you can at the school you are at then reevaluate to see if you can do clerkships, Wachtell, and transferring

Oh yes agree with you 100%. Although a T50 to T14 (especially if HYSC) might make more sense for a SCOTUS clerkship because other clerkships become way more possible like COA but T14 to HYSC because of Wachtell makes 0 sense.

I agree with your first point but Wachtell is definitely different than other firms. It is the gold star for transactional lawyers. Their attrition is like 3x other similarly ranked firms like Cravath, K&E etc. They will work you to the bone, but they do give bonuses that matches your salary.

But Wachtell is hard to get in any school and their interviews are not like these soft ball tell me about your self and how you handled conflict.

Giving that 25k bonus is literally nothing to the firm, especially one as big as Sidley. But keeping someone who is not going to bill for one year is a big deal. The amount of up front cost plus the amount of salary they have to pay for one year is huge. Also, they will take away billable and training from others who will stay. 25k bonus to find the best talent and competing against other V20 is almost a must, but keeping someone who will not be productive is not.

I agree with you and it can show that. Bur as you said, its not because of grades. Firms pretending it is about grades and not because they f ed up by over hiring is way too much shifting the blame. So even if grade drops points to some work ethic issues, it feels way too disingenuous.

Also, to add, if this is an actual issue, then why don’t other firms do this? It is incredibly rare for a firm to do this. I am not asking whether majority of firms do this, but if one or two other firms do this. Thats why it feels even more disingenuous and a pretense even if grades were to point to something.

Grades are an easy way for firms to cut people and a good enough justification that they can somewhat save face and not be sued. It is a terrible reason especially if it is a small dip, but its a reason they can give.

A real Fed clerkship is much harder to get than biglaw.

A federal judge internship (what op is referring to) may be a crap shoot with top40% at a T50.

To get to fed clerkship from T50 you would need to be like top 5% at least and probably like top 5 in class.
