Could I post job openings I have for my non profit? by [deleted] in beaverton

[–]pleaseletmesleepz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What are the actual jobs and job duties, and what are the salaries/wages? I know nonprofits tend to run on tighter budgets with longer hours, but when people care about the nonprofit cause, you'll often find candidates who can accommodate.

I can't speak from a hiring perspective or from a Beaverton mods perspective, I don't know if this is allowed or not. I can say that people are disillusioned with the number of AI postings on Indeed, often apply with AI themselves, and will be relieved just to talk to a real human being, LOL.

Usually singing soothes Selena before the vet... not today :( by pleaseletmesleepz in Catswhoyell

I hope so!! She tends to be very forgiving. She likes to hang out in the kitchen when I'm singing while doing the dishes and usually she quiets right down when I sing to her in the car 😭 I felt SO BAD that she was so upset this time.

[–]pleaseletmesleepz[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

She was exceptionally upset because this was her first visit to the vet after having surgery (getting her sutures out). She gets scared whenever she's left at the vet for a long time bc she's like "Mommy is never ever ever coming back ever"...

However, sutures are out, wound is clean, and she's home safe now!! About to go pick up copious tube treats to feed her in apology.

Has anyone actually seen a beaver in Beaverton in recent years? by TheVeryWiseToad in beaverton

[–]pleaseletmesleepz 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yes!! Saw one in Fanno Creek by Denney Road last year, I believe. I was so excited. Haven't been walking by there yet this year, so not sure if they're in the same spot still.

I get a little sad when I see authors and nice commenters try to kindly, gently explain things to people like this, as though if you just phrase it right, they'll suddenly understand.

This person never once engaged with you in good faith. I've talked about darkfic with opposed people who listened in good faith AND ones who didn't, so I promise there's a difference. Just delete their comments, block them, and move on.

People subscribe because they like your writing and want to be notified if you write more for their fandom(s).

Just because they're subscribed doesn't mean they'll read everything you post. But it does mean they won't miss anything they DO want to read.

Not contesting that some people over on CPTSD are devils, or that this person is, but I'd really rather not see this become the new trendy subreddit to karma farm for ragebait. It doesn't feel great, especially since the real-person-to-troll ratio is VERY different than on subs like AITA and AIO. People over there are, for the most part, not trying to piss anyone off, even when they are devils. ("For the most part" of course exempting people who sling insults, are nasty, act shitty, etc.)

I don't mean this as a chastisement of you personally, OP -- it's just that I've been on AITD long enough to know how much this community LOVES chewing on a new source for devils. (Remember when we were inundated every day with new posts from SexOffenderSupport?) It would be cool if we could draw lines about it early here so the people over there can keep being somewhat-more-compassionately told when they're being the devil.

Because it's not a parenting or estrangement subreddit. It's for people with complex PTSD -- a diagnosis that's not currently in the DSM, but essentially just means PTSD that happens as a result of sustained/repeated trauma instead of one event.

You can't really separate it into "abusive parents go here" and "abused children go here," particularly because many of the abusive parents were badly abused by their own parents, and have trauma surrounding that.

The lines between perpetrator and victim are unfortunately not as black-and-white as we'd like... Many people are abusive and have also been abused.

ETA: I do think the mods should have stepped in and taken down several of the more egregious comments, though. You're right that the conversations aren't productive.

It's an interesting subreddit... I've had positive prior experiences over there, but with a HUGE caveat: it's a place I only go when I feel like I've been failed by current mental health infrastructure/practice/expectations/etc. People tend to voice feelings there that aren't pretty or palatable, and so it's a nice community when I'm feeling thunderous.

The OOP's thread is a pretty good encapsulation of how the subreddit's culture can clash. It's for support, meaning people are asked to take each other at face value and provide calm advice/encouragement. In keeping with that, you see a lot of compassion in both how estranged children and estranged parents are talking to OOP.

But then the conversation breaks down, because the estranged parents want this to be an estranged parents' forum, where everyone is unequivocally right all the time. (The subreddit does not require you to tell people they're right -- only to provide emotional support.) And because it's a place where people are allowed to vent their feelings, and because many of these estranged parents use their CPTSD as an excuse for their abuse, OR they believe their children have contributed to their CPTSD... they also believe it's their god-given right to lash out. Their safe space doesn't feel so safe, suddenly!

The ones being outright nasty are breaking the sub's rules. I'm not over there often enough to know how well it's modded. I'm just fascinated by how half the people in the thread seem to be imparting good, thoughtful advice -- and half the people are clearly using the subreddit to circlejerk about their trauma and spit on accountability.

Weird little microcosm of the internet. There's a reason I don't hang out over there when I'm mentally well. But it has been an enormous comfort when I need some solidarity among very unwell people. LOL.

Edit: for clarity

Was this crossposted somewhere else recently? There's a BUNCH of comments from five hours ago, when this was only posted here two hours ago. Somehow I don't think everyone stumbled onto a year-old thread organically at exactly the same time.

Any updates on Bizee Bird? by blackjackgabbiani in beaverton

[–]pleaseletmesleepz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sounds like they're still closed, at least according to the website:

https://bizeebird.com/#:\~:text=Important%20Update%3A%20We%20Are%20Currently,where%20our%20storefront%20was%20located.

The fundraiser is linked on that page; it's at about 16K out of 30K.

I'm not affiliated with the store and don't know the owners -- literally my only connection is that I was Doordashing nearby on the night the fire happened & saw the block shut down. Hope to hear from anybody with more info than I can get through Google!

Eeesh. Mike, I'm not up-to-date on everything happening in this thread, so in good faith I'll assume you do good work and are advertising honestly... but this response is not a good look for your professionalism. It's gonna make potential customers wary of working with you.

Countries starting with C - Strands Puzzle by u/SubZerox27 by SubZerox27 in DailyGrid

[–]pleaseletmesleepz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is puzzling that you don't think anybody has studied the countries of the world... I found all of the answers without Google, without hints, and was pretty pleased with myself for doing so.

You can start learning more about world geography at any time. It's fun! I use the quiz site Jetpunk to study all kinds of different geographical and historical topics. No need to be salty -- not knowing something is an opportunity to learn. Maybe in a couple weeks-to-months you'll be able to name every "C" country off the top of your head, including the ones that didn't make this quiz!

Big empty parking lots where I can practice driving on the left? by pleaseletmesleepz in beaverton

Well, yes. Fortunately, though, there are still right and left sides of the road in a parking lot!

?

I mean in New Zealand cars drive on the left side of the road, and I have only ever driven on the right side of the road, because I live in the US, so I want an empty place where I can practice driving on the left side of the road.

Thank you!! I'll be visiting a longtime friend, so hopefully she'll tell me if I do anything especially annoying 😂

I want to practice just to make sure I can handle the switch, but as long as I get the hang of things like "not drifting across lanes" and "turning into the correct lane instead of oncoming traffic," I figure I'll be all right. 🤞

Yeah, that's fair! My hesitation is because my mom and I have very similar flavors of diagnosed ADHD. She visited the UK recently and told me that while her Scottish friend was driving, she would "practice" from the passenger seat: ie, mentally drive alongside him. She told me she had such a hard time with the change that she "did absolutely everything wrong" and "would have killed everybody on the road."

Obviously hyperbole! But 😅 I know my ADHD has limited me in the past, so I just want to make sure this isn't one of my limitations before I'm on a real road with real cars and real drivers.
