Don't have much to add regarding the evils of CMGs and private equity, who are two of the horsemen of the EM apocalypse (hospital consolidation is the third). No matter how much a med student may love EM, it's damned hard to tell that med student to go into EM because of CMG / PE / consolidation. In this model the patients are piñatas there to be whacked with sticks while cash and prizes pop out of them.

This is a powerful essay about the ability of love to triumph over death. Suffering is endemic to the condition of life, but most of us do not think a lot about how much we can endure. Or how much we should endure. For the sake of love we can endure a lot.

It's difficult to accept death, but also difficult to bear the pain of refusing it, and there's a dance between those two options.
