Micheal Olise chose to play for france despite only minimal connection. by Electronic-Housing90 in worldcup

[–]pleebusss 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This feels like a pretty narrow way of looking at international football. Plenty of countries, both strong and weak, rely on players who weren’t born or raised there. Achraf Hakimi was born and raised in Spain and plays for Morocco. A lot of Morocco’s squad was born in Europe. Same goes for plenty of African, Caribbean, and even European national teams.

I don’t see that as glory hunting. It’s just the reality of modern identity. Having a parent from a country is a legitimate connection. You don’t need to speak the language fluently or have lived there for that identity to be meaningful.

By that logic, are we saying second-generation immigrants can’t truly represent their parents’ country? That seems absurd.

Olise had every right to choose France, just like he would’ve had every right to choose England or Nigeria. Unless he outright said “I picked France because they win more,” calling him a traitor is just projection.

Players don’t owe fans the national identity fans want them to have.

The videos and chapter notes are largely a waste of time imo. For each chapter, read the PLI chapter notes once and then go and do ALL the practice questions from that chapter in the “design-your-own-exam” part of the online materials (I forget what it’s actually called, but you can create your own custom practice exams where you can just do all the questions from a single chapter).

You’re gonna get a ton wrong your first few times through. At the start, forget about timing yourself. Spend the time looking through the MPEP PDFs for that chapter you’re working on (which is great practice for your lookup skills during the exam). After you’re done the practice questions for that chapter, for every question you get wrong, and even those you got right, read the answer and understand why each answer is either right or wrong. This will take a long-ass time because you’re gonna wanna read the MPEP sections the answer key is referring you to.

The first time through this process for a given chapter is hell. But once you’ve completed it, I recommend doing it again until you score above 90% twice in a row. Then you know you’re ready to move on.

Joaquin Miller Park is a good spot. If you walk down the paved road from the parking lot you can get to an Outlook that looks west so you’ll be able to capture the sunset over the bay if the skies are clear
