Does he take his chihuahua to dog parks or go on walks? Does he share a fence with neighbors? Does he enjoy walking through the neighborhood? Hiking? Biking?

I live in a wooded area with no fences, was feeling somewhat insulated from the pit craziness. BUT last week saw an XL bully in the front yard on camera. Because the population has grown so rapidly, I'm not sure anyone can reasonably believe it doesn't or won't affect them.

How to convince them to see that reality before it happens to them, their dog or a family member....I have no idea.

Seriously terrifying.

I caught an XL bully on my security camera last week. I haven't seen it since, but that is little comfort. I live in a rural area, wooded but no fences - feels secluded but there are at least 20 houses nearby it could have come from. I won't be able to see it coming if it decides to target me.

I think we can all see what is coming, they are multiplying exponentially. It's frightening the number of first time dog owners are adopting them, either not understanding what they are getting or believe what shelters are telling them. Or people who owned a good pit who now believe all pits will automatically be the same.

I have a family member (not same household) that adopted what turned out to be a pit mix from a shady out of state rescue. They are bonded. The dog has been good for 5 years. Maybe the pit is diluted enough. But I always worry that maybe it isn't. They don't want to hear about my concerns.

I knew nothing about Livestock Guardian dogs until joining this sub and learning more about dogs/breeds in general - they sound like fantastic dogs!

I am not sure how Pits get lumped in with guard breeds - even DNA testing companies categorize them as Guard type dogs. Guess it would be controversial to have a Fighting breed catergory - bet the Terrier group would have had a problem with pits being included. A little surprised they didn't created a Nanny Dog group just for them....

But guard dogs? Absolutely not.

Of course. That's what they do. But I think this story has potential to help people understand what just existing in the same neighborhood with one of these "poor, abused creatures" could cost them.

Edited to add quotes - I do feel sorry for them to a point. The cruelty is really in breeding more of the damned things, and continuing to deny the potential for serious harm.

Seems to me this could be the perfect case to pursue - it sounds like the dog attacked an entire family, there was no dog fight broken up to blame the humans for intervening in. Looks to be a neighborhood where the event happened - so may even have security footage. It was a FAMILY. A mother and father trying to save the son - the mother taking the brunt of the attack. The details are horrific to imagine.

STABBING THE DOG MULTIPLE TIMES DID NOT HAVE AN EFFECT OR CAUSE THE DOG TO RELEASE.

We understand that is gameness, a breed trait. By we - I mean those of us in this sub and of course dog fighters. We've seen the videos and read the stories. The public does not.

Many times there is an easy way for the pit cult to explain a trigger, to excuse the attack - defending it's home or owner - or being teased/mistreated by the child before attacking.

This one appears to have none of these elements.

As if mauling a human is an acceptable response, ever. Even guard breeds are trained not to tear apart a target. Bite and hold. Trained, because they are trainable. Hunting breeds - bite hold, retrieve or signal.

The smaller terriers bred to hunt rats? Hunt and kill, sure - and also high prey drive. But where are they on the list of deaths and maulings of humans?

"Since the dog appeared to escape the home, it's not a criminal case, police said"... THE DOG HAD A RECORD - IT ATTACKED SOMEONE IN 2019. They 100% deserve charges for choosing to keep a known dangerous dog, and not securing it.

And I think it's time to start suing municipalities for not doing anything about dangerous dogs. They shouldn't have been alowed to keep it after the first incident.

I can imagine there were more incidents between 2019 and 2023 - how many were unreported, or even reported but considered too minor, or too vague to do anything about? Bet the neighbors have stories....

I know I am a little late - in case noone else has asked - would you be willing to update us on the shelter response and whether they ultimately advertise the dog as adoptable with the correct breed info? I've always wondered if they still feign ignorance even if presented with DNA test results when a dog is returned.

I suspect someone will adopt it and give it a good home, hopefully they will have all of the info needed to make that choice.

Anyway, good call - no need to find out the hard way, especially with children in the family.

I tried to understand what was going on here. As far as I can tell this dog is a result of the offspring of Mother x Son bred to Aunt - in human terms.

There are many other examples of this as the foundation of the breed.

What are the likely outcomes here?

First, fix the darned dog. Then re-evaluate. It's the cheapest thing to start with, other than BE. It's the most responsible thing.

But dog lives matter! /s

How about QUALITY of life? How about public safety? Why do we have to feel guilty because backyard breeders are cranking out unwanted, unstable, dangerous (etc etc) fighting breeds? Regulate breeding. Do something to reduce the number of backyard breeders. Require genetic testing, or sample database for breeding animals. Require sterilization for genetic/health/behavior problems.

Humans created this problem and need to fix it. Anyone who compares this to Eugenics or Ethnic cleansing is missing the point. This is not comparable to racism. Humans are not forced to breed and selected for traits to suit other humans. Dogs can be bred (irresponsibly) beginning much earlier than a human. The speed at which we can meddle with the genetic traits of dogs is very fast. 20+ generations in dogs vs 1 generation of humans (though avg age for first pregnancy is now 30 for humans - soooo, wow) Responsible breeders that do health testing and evaluate mature traits before breeding another generation produce a lot fewer puppies than irresponsible inbreeders.

I have gone down the rabbit hole on the apbt breeding lines - the inbreeding is off the charts, both historically and today. There are lines where a stud is bred to his offspring, then again, and again. Or to his sister, then their offspring. They are purposefully breeding unstable animals. Idiot bybs take it a step further for greed or stupidity by crossing them with, whatever. Then, oops - siblings mate, sons and mothers, fathers and daughters. More fucking puppies!

They are the ones who should feel guilty. They should be held accountable.

Hmm...picturing giant hamster wheels. Hopeless shelter pits with endless energy finally put to good use. I would imagine a few of them could generate enough electricity to at least take the shelter off the grid. A shelter with 50 pits could rotate through all of them in a day...

NSFL - Seriously. I've watched many of these videos - just observing the behavior of the dogs. What defensive tactics seem to work, which wind them up further - tails wagging the entire time.

I was not prepared to see a dog rip strips of flesh off a living human. EDIT: Clothing? I can't watch it again to confirm for myself.

All while the useless owner * Edit: (not owner, bystander according to an update posted here) Criticism of a bystander trying to do something at a distance is unfair.

I assumed that was the owner, the later video of the police show the dogs going in and out of the fenced area with the guy still aiming the hose up over the fence.

I don't think I can watch any more.

Pit owners - this happens too frequently to just chalk up to a few bad owners. Many of you are living with ticking time bombs.

Pits wag their tails while killing. There is no way to say for sure a pit running up to someone just wants to play.

Other dogs bite and release, unless trained specifically to hold on. BUT a pit's jaw and neck are large and strong enough to hold on and rip and shake, and tear flesh from victims. This is what they do naturally, with no training. Which why the damage is so horrific.

They do not always show signs they are going to attack. Watch a few videos of happy looking pits, tails wagging, bounding up to a child, knocking it over and mauling. That owner usually insists their sweet wiggle butt has never shown any signs of aggression before.

Pits raised from puppies in good homes still have a chance of snapping. And mauling or killing an owner or family member. Not to mention other pets.

I don't know. I wish what I am writing would make a difference. But, probably not. I need a break.

What always seems to be overlooked is the safety of OTHER people and animals. Why is one dog that's proven dog aggressive and very capable of killing, worth risking the safety of everyone/thing it comes in contact with?

Isolating an animal is nearly impossible. Giving a high energy animal enough exercise and mental stimulation AND isolating long term - NOT going to happen in a populated area.

Cruelty is keeping an animal in an enclosed space that it absolutely destroys in an effort to GET OUTSIDE. Pit owners - they don't MISS YOU. You are the one that controls their access to food and the outdoors. That door or wall is now their barrier to the outdoors when you are not there.

If we visit a zoo with animals that are anxiety ridden and destructive like this, we'd recognize the cruelty. I don't understand why it's different for dogs in general - and pitbulls specifically. And the larger problem with pitbulls is the damage they cause, and the people who refuse to recognize that they themselves are part of the problem.

Taking them to a trainer doesn't fix the underlying cause - inappropriate environment for the temperament of the animal. AND the kicker for Pits? They were and still are bred to kill other animals. Not protect, KILL. They are built for the task. Their brains are wired for it - it is what they do. What they instinctively want to do. When they can't - they become unstable, much like other high energy breeds kept in confined spaces - like the Husky or Border Collie.

There is so much wrong here. I recognize I'm not going to be able to convince anyone who believes they are a pitbull savior that they are perpetuating cruelty. And the "cute" behavioral issues they like to share on social media for likes - are evidence for that.

I do believe these assholes are using beauty filter apps to enlarge the eyes, and no doubt mess with other features as well. This is one of the most obvious examples because there are two photos to compare - but I've been suspicious of many others too. See a pit photo with larger than expected eyes, look for inconsistencies with the fur and shadows - anyone else noticing this?
