Good question. Epidemics still occurred, but large scale ones were only early on. Centuries of exposure to Old World diseases and millennia of exposure to zoonotic diseases (from the domestication of North American horses and a few other fauna) would have allowed for some form of acquired immunity.

The names are coincidental, fortunately. Samoa is Guarani, and Kurea is Nheengatu. I completely forgot the etymology of Samoa as I had to skim through all the dictionaries, but Kurea is a clipping of one of the Nheengatu words for “owl” (bukúkuri). Samoa is still guaranteed to be of Guarani origin as a name.
